Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020(1)
Are you talking about missed free throws from the Nigerians or in general? African countries as we saw last night usually play pretty free flowing but unorganised basketball they do fundamentals well doesn't matter if it's Nigeria, Angola or Cameroon.Corona Man wrote:I am no basketball officianado however looking at both teams last night, comprised of plenty of highly paid professional NBA players.... how come the free throw shooting is so poor? Is that the equivalent of missing a goal from 20 metres straight in front? Surely that’s a skill mastered at under 16 level.
In general? An acceptable FT percentage for a pro is 75% the pretty good ones can shoot above 80% and the elite into 85-90%. Even though it is for the most part mechanics playing in different arenas all the time changes the backgrounds etc so that can have an effect (player always shoot better on their home courts) plus in big tournaments like the Olympics nerves come into it too.
In regards to your footy analogy hitting a FT is a fair bit harder than kicking a goal 20m out directly in front. It would probably be more equivalent to 40-50m directly in front and we've seen plenty of gun forwards over the years struggle to kick accurately like Matthew Richardson or even Taylor Walker is an ordinary kick when directly in front he needs to be on an angle.

Some good points Gozu. As I said I’m not that familiar with the game and only take a passing interest.
I will take your stats on board as what is a acceptable conversion rate at this level.
Thanks for your point of view...

No problem I remember having this same conversation with my old man growing up. He was a footy head just had a passing interest in basketball through attending my games. He would say NBA players getting paid $20 million a year should hit 9 or 10 free throws out of 10 every time, there's a very small margin for error it's a lot harder to knock them in consistently at that clip especially playing at different venues all the time.Corona Man wrote:Some good points Gozu. But yeah there was one Nigerian NBA player last night Vincent that shot 4/8 from the FT line, unacceptable at that level but nerves no doubt played a part.

That's unforgivable he shot something like 35% on FT during the playoffs, crazy stuff for a pro.Jim05 wrote:Or players like Simmons who are deliberatey fouled because they are pathetic FT shooters

Titmus went to the rope and looked over toward Ledecky but she had moved over to the other rope and didn't appear to look over. Next shot I saw however was Ledecky giving Titmus a hug out of the pool so kudos for that. Must be difficult to deal with the pressure and expectation so perhaps, in the pool, she just needed to gather her thoughts.Eagles2014 wrote: Respect to the American too, gracious by both girls. Great table Dutchy, where did you get that from?
Alternatively, if you can post it each day that would be very handy.

2 very good swims today. Titmus fastest qualifier in the 200, and the back stroke girl came home from the clouds to take the gold just now.
