The Captain of the team is not his Clubs Captain

The best young player is 28

The best player can’t make the starting 18

And the best one is Hawthorns third best defender is in the side.

So does that make 13/22 mid fielders in the team including all four on the bench

And the umpires get criticised for the Brownlow being a mid fielder award.

A cynic might suggest the AFL deliberately makes controversial and outrageous decisions on these minor matters so that it drums up media engagement / viewership.

I would never suggest that however and lean more towards the fact they are just completely incompetent.

I think they are different players. One a pure stay home forward and one that gets up the ground a fair bit and impacts a lot of contests.
