Tribute to Bob Skilton - Bloods Legend A tribute to triple Brownlow Medallist and nine-time Swans Club Champion Bob Skilton who has been immortalised with his own sculpture outside Lakeside Oval in Melbourne.
“Brilliant, resilient, courageous and scrupulously fair” – that’s how triple Brownlow Medallist and nine-time Swans Club Champion Bob Skilton has been described on a plaque accompanying a sculpture unveiled in his honour at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium.

More than 140 guests turned out on Thursday to celebrate the special occasion at the South Melbourne office of the Sydney Swans.

Among the guests were Sydney Swans coach John Longmire, captain Josh Kennedy, past and present Swans players, Swans CEO and Managing Director Andrew Ireland, chairman Andrew Pridham and members of the Board, former chairman Richard Colless, Bloods Legends Herbie Matthews and Peter Bedford, and club greats including Ron Barassi, Paul Roos and Michael O’Loughlin.

The sculpture, by artist Cathy Weiszmann, was made possible by philanthropist and long-time Sydney Swans supporter Basil Sellers, who was behind theBasil Sellers Sports Sculpture Project which installed bronze sporting heroes around the SCG.

An emotional Bob Skilton said he felt humbled by the occasion.

“It’s not often that I feel this way, but I am overwhelmed by the reaction of everyone – I do feel immensely thankful and immensely proud,” he said.

“I never imagined this, and I hope I have been able to give to football as much as it has given to me.”

Sydney Swans chairman Andrew Pridham has paid tribute to the Legend.

“The Sydney Swans, our 1.2 million supporters, our 60,000 members, our players, coaches and administrators past and present, all share a love and admiration for Bob Skilton,” Pridham said.

“It’s people like Bobby, those who endure, shine, stay loyal and inspire, who laid the foundations for the success of our club, today and into the future.

“Today we are privileged to witness the unveiling of a sculpture of an ordinary man who grew into a legend. It’s a sculpture made of bronze for a man with a character as strong as steel and a heart of gold. Thankyou Bobby Skilton, you will always be revered.”

In 1995, the Sydney Swans renamed their Club Champion award the Bob Skilton Medal, in honour of the man whose remarkable career spanned 237 games between 1956-68 and 1970-71. His many accolades include:

3 x Brownlow Medallist (1959, ’63 and ’68)
9 x Sydney Swans club champion (1958-59, 1961-65 and 1967-68. He also finished 2nd three times and 3rd once, meaning he placed in the top three in 13 of his 15 seasons)
3 x South Melbourne leading goal kicker (1959, ’62 and ’63)
Legend, AFL Hall of Fame (1996)
Bloods Legend, Sydney Swans Hall of Fame (2009)
Represented Victoria in 25 state games
Swans coach for 35 games (1965-66)
Sydney Swans Team of the Century, (captain)

Swans defender Aliir Aliir has committed to Sydney, signing a three-year contract extension that will tie him to the Club until at least the end of 2021.

Recruited with pick 44 in the 2013 AFL Draft, the 23-year-old had to bide his time in the NEAFL for his first two years on Sydney’s list.

Called up to make his debut in Round 6, 2016, the rebounding defender made the most of his chances at senior level, playing 13 games in his debut season and emerging as a key pillar of Sydney’s back six.

After an injury interrupted 2017 campaign, Aliir has returned to top form this season, playing the past five matches and providing plenty of poise, dash and rebound from the backline.

Swans Head of Football, Tom Harley, says the Club’s excited to have the key defender commit to Sydney.

“We are very pleased to announce Aliir’s contract extension for a further three years,” Harley said.

“Aliir has a great story to tell and we see his footy as an exciting next chapter in his life.

“Since 2016, Aliir has had to overcome some injury challenges but we have seen in the past couple of weeks what he is capable of.

“Aliir is a popular clubman who we see playing an integral role for our club in the future.”

Aliir joins a host of emerging Swans to re-sign this year, including Will Hayward, Ben Ronke, Ryley Stoddart, Joel Amartey and Matt Ling.

Alex Johnson has been named to make his long awaited return to the AFL on Saturday night.


Sydney Swans defender Alex Johnson will play his first senior game in 2136 days when Sydney takes on Collingwood at the SCG on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old starred in Sydney’s 10-point win over Hawthorn in the 2012 grand final but hasn’t played an AFL game since.

Johnson has overcome five knee reconstructions, a total of 12 knee operations, a reoccurring knee infection and one bout of groin surgery.

He returned via the NEAFL for his first match in 1736 days to face the Canberra Demons at Manuka Oval last July, and has now received his chance off the back of seven consistent games in the NEAFL this season.

The Swans recruited Johnson from the Oakleigh Chargers with pick 57 in the 2010 national draft.

Johnson’s story is one of persistence, toughness and courage.
