The SFL program for 2016 is under development. A 14 team competition next season will see the season played over 18 weeks rather than 20. This placed the start date at April 9th, 2 weeks after Easter. The SFL Grand Final has traditionally been played on the weekend before the AFL Grand Final. However, with the announcement today of a later AFL Grand Final (september 1st) and our shorter than in previous years season, it was decided to maintain the April 9 start date and have our grand final 2 weeks before the AFL.
There will still be weekends off for our clubs on June 11th (Queen's Birthday Long Weekend) and July 9th (State Country Football Championships).

Good decision by the SFL (they can make them from time to time). A 20 week season, 2 weeks off for long weekend and Country Champs, and a later AFL GF meant we played our GF on the last Saturday in September this year.

But for clubs still involved come GF day, it seemed as though the season would never end. Plus it caused clubs like ours problems with the timing of Junior and Senior Presentation Nights, not to mention trophies etc. particularly with the October long weekend amongst that period.

A 9 April start, no BYE's except for the 2 forced weeks off, and a mid-September GF Day is a very pleasing outcome.

Not sure why we would need the Country Championships weekend off as we have now been declared a Metro league by the SANFL

How many teams have left the SFL in the past 25 years? I think Brighton are the last team to enter (and stay) in that time.
Where's Bill? Yeah... Hmm... Bill is on the Villa Quatro, on the road to Salina. I will draw you a map.

Brighton only one to have stayed
Edwardstown & Mitchell Park the only other two to join in that period
Go back a little further and Marion and Morphettville Park have now been with us for 28 years

As for left, McLaren, Kangarilla, Meadows went during that period. All division 2 teams

2 mergers - Lonsdale & O'Sullivan Beach and McLaren Flat & McLaren Vale

Congratulations to Flagstaff Hill A Grade Coach Rod Mitchell receiving West Adelaide FC Metro zone's Senior Coach of the Year tonight at SANFL Coaches Awards Dinner at Adelaide Oval.

Ben Coleman ( Morphett Vale) won the South Adelaide FC award in the same category.

Yes, and previous answers referred to clubs that entered 28 years ago and in the 80's ... so didn't think one more piece of missing info would offend your sensibilities so much LGIL. So sorry for the offence.

There was no offence, I suspected that the initial question was trying to suggest that clubs were fleeing on mass.

In reality we have offloaded a number of problem/weak clubs, effectively a positive for the league.

May be we should off load more problem/weaker clubs for a stronger 10 team competition,
