Obviously we were well beaten today thoroughly outclassed but we still have a chance to create history for our country by winning our first medal in men's basketball at an Olympics or World Cup. Winning today would've just guaranteed it.

1996 Olympics - we lost to Lithuania in the bronze medal game
2000 Olympics - again we lost to Lithuania in the bronze medal game
2016 Olympics - we lost to Spain by one point in the bronze medal game
Practice matches unfortunately.
They will destroy France in the final and this is far from their best side too

Have France beaten Slovenia?

Entertaining start to Soccer Bronze medal game, already 2-1 down

US best player with both goals, Sam Kerr naturally scored for us.

Terrible mistake by our defender to hand them their second goal

Beaten by the USA for bronze in 1988 Olympics as well.

1996 was tough but IIRC Lithuania with Arvydas Sabonis just had us at arm's length for most of the game.

2000 just weren't good enough, comprehensively beaten.

2016 robbed on that foul call against Mills. Gut wrenching.

Throw in the last FIBA World Cup where we inexcusably failed to medal again and I think we've seen just about every type of loss imaginable for this team when playing for a medal. Bitterly disappointing.

France and Slovenia very close at the moment just before half time, I think France will get up though.

Can't let this opportunity slip, they have been deserving of a medal for a while. It's about time they grabbed it.

I tend to agree.
We do fight well out of our weight class though in most team events.

Our real bonafide gold medal chances have not delivered.

Two topped ranked sides in the world. High standard game that could have gone either way, but I thought Belgium held a slight edge overall. Their goalie was outstanding in the shootout. Credit to Belgium.

Thanks for pointing that out, I only started following basketball around 90-91 so didn't see that '88 result but I knew there was one 4th place finish before my time but thought it was a WC. That loss in Atlanta was upsetting but the one at home in Sydney was heartbreaking. Flogged at our home Olympics.

That last WC in 2019 was just sad. We had Spain on the ropes in the SF looking for payback for Rio the gold medal game right there and we lose to them in double overtime. And then get pumped in the bronze medal game for good measure. Following the Boomers over the last 30 years has been like one big cruel joke.

If we lose in the bronze medal game again on Saturday I might even shed a tear ;)

Ash Moloney wins bronze in the decathlon.

Dropped a massive F bomb when he realised he won it

How good is Luka Doncic? Not sure how the Boomers can stop him.

Doncic carrying what looks like a shoulder injury. Hopefully the break the Boomers need

He chased down a loose ball and crashed into the officials bench quite hard

Definitely the key to the match. Stop him and we get that elusive first ever medal. At 22 years of age is already one of the best players in the NBA, if he does have slight injury will be a bonus. They also looked absolutely shattered after the loss to France which sometimes is hard to come back from.

That was an amazing effort. He looked gone in that 1500m. Will that be our only athletics medal? The girls in 1500 are fighting for bronze as two clear standouts, and boys look like will be tough the following night.

Sounds like a disappointing Olympics if so, but can’t help but think it has been one of our best for a while, so many young promising athletes, from 4th and 5th’s in field events to the track has been exciting to watch for once.

We aren’t a good T&F nation so I wasn’t expecting too much at all.
Our cycling has really fallen off the cliff which to me has been the biggest disappointment
