I don’t buy that. If the team was so “ready made” why didn’t they win it in 2008 & 2010?

2008 we were outplayed when it mattered.
2010 our 2 finals losses were to teams that also got us in the minor round. And St Kilda were probably the best team on 09/10.

Bullshit. Thompson ran his race at Geelong in 2010. Scott came in and we won that flag without arguably the best player in the league.

17 teams fail every year, most of them go into the season knowing that they are unlikely to win it, most supporters are fine with that and accept what it is and hope their team is competitive from week to week snaring the occasional upset win.

We have a coach who repeatedly announces that "This is our Year" or "We will win 3 flags in the next 5 years", yeah it's great to be positive but you need to deliver, our squad has been good enough for some time, even in 2018 & 2019 we had momentum and then fell apart when it counted the most.

The windows aren't open forever and the comp isn't designed for sustainability unless you are selling a quality product to the players who will be willing to play for you while getting paid unders.

True, but in seems in the case of Port that there is that extra pressure because there is that solid cohort of older supporters who think they will dominate like the SANFL days or at least win a flag every so often. It's a painful transition in some ways to the AFL.
It's now 25 years in the AFL for one flag, that calculation is starting to really grind down a lot of their supporters.
So the supporter has to come to terms with their AFL record, not being what it perhaps should be. It's a professional league, more teams, more variables like an uneven draw. and up against teams with vastly more financial resources than what Port has. None of those factors worried them in the SANFL. On the other side certain equalizations policies mean premierships can be won by just about anyone when they get their act together.
The South Australian teams too tend to be at a disadvantage, in the sense that no big names can be recruited to Adelaide generally.

I get what you're putting down but I know heaps of Power supporters that never went for Port in the SANFL, or still don't. One premiership in 25 years still gets bums on seats when we're doing well, I guess in today's society people would rather lose by 5 goals opposed to one point, a bit like a premiership, some would rather not even being close than to lose a home prelim when you're favourites.

Yeah but is that enough. This is a team in their premiership window who were genuine contenders. Nothing but a GF at very least could be considered a success given their standing in the comp pre season.

To make finals but not a GF would be honourable from where they are but still has to be considered a fail and wasted season.

If not the bar is set to low for a club that exists to win premierships.

Completely different discussion if they were in a rebuild or what have you.

Exactly, there's enough huge upsets nowadays to know that anything can happen on any given day.

That's the beauty of Melbourne being favoured so much, they are the hunted and they can become complacent.

What 1 premiership from outside the top 4 since the induction of the final 8. What people forget as well is that whilst the Bulldogs finished 7 they were only one win out of the top 4. No chance Port will get within a win of the top 4 this year.

Yeah you have to make finals to win the flag but realistically your nothing more than a punchers chance if you don't make the top 4 and then even worse if you cant get a home elimination final.

Winning four finals in a row in modern day AFL is a step to far for 99% of sides.

With Port playing WCE, ST.K (A), WB (H), KANG (A), Geel (A). Even if they play really well there is a fair chance they could still be 3-7.
