This from yesterdays paper.

A CONTROVERSIAL umpiring decision in the final minute cost South Adelaide a miraculous draw against premier Glenelg at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

After producing a scintillating and brave comeback from 45 points behind at three-quarter-time to draw within six points, Panthers small forward Eamon Wilkinson was awarded a free kick for a push in the back by Tiger Michael Virgin in a marking contest on the edge of the goalsquare.

But unaware the free kick had been paid, Wilkinson then toe-poked the ball across the goal-line for a behind.

Rather than hand the ball back to Wilkinson, who would almost certainly have kicked the goal to tie the scores and complete South’s remarkable comeback, the field umpire called advantage play on, the behind stood and the stunned Tigers held on to win by five points, 15.7 (97) to 14.8 (92).

It was Glenelg’s second consecutive win by less than a goal to start the season after it beat Norwood by three points in Round 1.

Panthers coach Jarrad Wright blasted the decision to rob Wilkinson of a possible game-tying shot at goal, saying “he should have been given the free kick and a set shot’’.

“There was no advantage in that decision at all,’’ Wright said. “There was crowd noise, it was in the heat of the play and the ball goes through for a behind, there was no advantage play on whatsoever.

“It was a scrimmage, it wasn’t like someone grabbed the ball, played on and took two bounces before having a shot at goal. It should have been called back and been a set shot at goal, so it was disappointing for the game to end that way.’’

Wright said Wilkinson had told him he didn’t know he had been awarded the free when he soccered the ball through. The controversial end came after Glenelg – inspired by last year’s Magarey Medallist Luke Partington dominating with 34 disposals and three goals – powered to a 45-point lead at the final change.

With Jack Oatey Medallist Matthew Snook (29 disposals) and fellow midfielder Marlon Motlop (25 and two goals) also starring, the Tigers looked to be making a statement they were the team to beat again this year. But the gritty Panthers came storming back. They kicked seven goals to one in the final stanza to draw to within six points 26 minutes into the term before the gamedeciding Wilkinson decision.

Glenelg captain Max Proud, playing his 100th game, said his team was relieved to get the points but the late collapse had left the players feeling “very empty’’.

“We played really well for three quarters and probably should have put the foot on the throat but we went away from doing the things we are good at and nearly paid a big price,’’ he said. “It certainly gives us plenty to work on.’’
Convenient to focus on the last free kick & not the bewildering decisions/non decisions that helped South get back in the game.
Convenient that you keep overlooking the bewildering decisions/non decisions in the first half that helped Glenelg build a lead.

Yes I cant blame "akka" wilkinson for being unaware a free had been paid..... The last time South got a free kick that close to goal David Kantilla took the kick.

Law 20.2 needs to be read here.

Not up to the umpire to determine if the player understands/is aware that he has a free but elects to play on to advantage.

Players determine if they want to play on to advantage after a free kick, all the umpire is required to determine is,
1. Is play continuous?
2. Is it taken from in line or behind the “Mark”

Umpire got it right, player got it wrong

South coach needs to brush up on his understanding of the Laws of footy.

Now the real question is should Australian Football change their definition of advantage to that of Rugby where the Referee signals a penalty but allows the team to play on for a period of time to determine if they can score a try but then bring it back to the spot of the infringement.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

WEll it was written by a very biased journo. I think he did it to rub a bit of salt in.
I just watched the play on Digital Pass. It was definitely a free. Not sure if he umpire paid it. Did he just call play on, Shocking mistake if yes. Has the rule or understanding of the rule been changed where a player is offered the score or offered a retake of the kick? It was certainly no advantage with the player on the ground.

How was the play continuous when the player was on the ground and had to scramble to get a boot to the ball?

Only for discussions sake and not a we should have won scenario. No game is won or lost on one decision. My view is and it does not have to refer to that isolated case.

20.2 THE ADVANTAGE RULE
A field Umpire will call and signal ‘Advantage’ where a Team offended against
demonstrates an intent to continue with play within a reasonable time.

An umpire does and always has ensured that an offended player/team is aware that they have been awarded a free. This also lets the offending player/team know that a free kick is in place.

The taking of advantage is not reliant on the ball being played in line or behind the mark. This happens in the majority of advantage/play on situations. Players are often pushed in the back or perhaps hit high when disposing of the ball and it can go 30 metres to the side and the advantage rule is used.

Michael Wundke, that night match in May 2011. Dragged it back in on Todd Grima, held it to him and got HTB.

Was laughing at his mate TG (they are good mates) as he got up. Goal, siren draw....

Rubbers last point with the Bays

can never be as bad a decision as that made by the goal umpire in 75gf when in the last qtr mike poulter ran the ball across the line and it was paid a goal, and yes mike admits it was over the line and thought he had effed up big time until the blind goal magot put up the two fingers

So you would have lost the game by 7 points instead of 12.

Who would have thunk the online version wouldn't work:

SANFL wishes to advise that the South Australian Football Budget will not continue for season 2020 due to the financial impact of COVID-19 and an ongoing decline in sales.

The Football Budget will be replaced by a 24-page printed SANFL Season Guide which will feature every club’s numbered squad list for the Statewide Super League and Statewide Super Women’s League.

The Guide can be purchased for $2 from Club merchandise stands or canteens on match day from this weekend.

SANFL General Manager Commercial Operations Neal Matotek said an insufficient number of fans had embraced the magazine’s digital edition trial in rounds one and two.

“As SANFL comes to terms with the significant shortfall in revenue caused by the coronavirus pandemic, together with the ongoing decline in print sales, the Football Budget continues to be negatively impacted,” he said.

Mr Matotek said the future of the Football Budget would be reviewed at the end of the season 2020.

Those who have subscribed to a full season of the digital Budget will have their subscription refunded on a pro rata basis. This process is currently underway.

Im sure their reasons are valid, and the cost/loss involved might be too big to carry, but losing the Budget feels like a piece of the fabric of the competition is now missing. Nothing new I guess, but a shame nonetheless.

Yes, agree with you. Very sad.

Other things we have lost red behind posts, torpedo punt instead of screw punt, banana kick instead of check side.
Also noticed The Advertiser now publish the teams reading from the back lines instead of from the forward lines.
We also are the only League that has the last touch rule. Get rid of it.

It is a new world even before the new normal of COVID-19.
