"Needs".
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Comp went alright this year
I’d say the 2 AFL sides need the SANFL more than the SANFL needs them

If you don't think the SANFL need Port/Adelaide to keep the AFL happy I'd be surprised.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Keeping the AFL happy is who's priority?

The SANFL is no longer the SANFL, it's a puppet of the AFL,
we have the players they want & a very handy competition for2 AFL sides to try out their players,
let's face it, we're being used,
if the SANFL was serious, it would tell the AFL to remove their 2 sides & if push came to shove, we would tell the AFL to bugger off & go it alone.
We could do it but the SANFL as it appears right now doesn't want to do that.
Because their number 1 priority isn't the 8 SANFL clubs.

Every competition below the AFL receives some funding from the AFL, it couldn't happen even if they wanted it too.

Certainly appears that way, but their number 1 priority appears to be SMA dividends and AFL funding, which in theory should probably be the biggest income injection for SANFL clubs?

The AFL absolutely hate the SANFL clubs controlling juniors, only a matter of time before they set up a National TAC Cup or the like

I have. So there. Pffftttt.

I think your point is the SANFL needs to keep the AFL happy as it's priority.

My point would be that the SANFL needs to keep it's constituent clubs happy as the priority. I understand that the majority of the clubs want the AFL reserves in the league. The SANFL as the controlling body is the means for that outcome.

The SANFL does need a good working relationship with the AFL. I am unaware of any funding (not fee for service) that the SANFL receives from the AFL. I have never looked into it so I may be pleasantly surprised.

Yep personally I believe the issues stemmed from around the early/mid 2000's. Around the 'Your Tribe is Calling' marketing campaign era.

The SANFL was seriously positioning itself as the alternative to the AFL. Numbers were on the rise, there was multiple radio stations calling games, ABC on tv, multiple page media coverage and whilst the AFL would not have been scared I do definitely believe it opened their eyes to a threat of a potential alternative competition (not that it would have been the SANFL but maybe one with serious financial backing)

Since then the AFL has done everything possible to eliminate that bridge between AFL and amateur/country leagues. If the AFL wants/needs to secure its own future for the next 100 years by making sure they are control any aspect above amateur/country which obviously will never be any more than that.

Unfortunately since then the SANFL has had a long list of puppet CEO's who have only looked out for their own careers to the detriment of the SANFL.

To be honest we might as well call it the AFLSANFL and get it over and done with. The only way we will ever get our independence back is if an AFL reserves come in but by then the AFL would have done enough to ensure the SANFL is nothing more than a glorified amateur comp.

The SANFL does not need Port or the crows but more so the image that they re still related.

It's all about the bigger game.

Bang there it is. The SMA is the key to all of this.

Not the key to it but the SMA dividends has little to with Port and Crows being in the comp. Money was scarce this year for obvious reasons hence the salary cap drop.
The SANFL clubs should get a dividend as Port again screwed the SANFL by backstabbing(again) the league wanting AO.

They will come with their hand out begging when they are stuffed again. Already did recently and will again. Not the SANFL issue now.

Well both parties can walk away from each other at any point.

So why would the SANFL walk away when the SMA provides a dividend ? The SANFL are part of the SMA .

Exactly, the dividend is the key.

The only reason I can think of that the SANFL want the AFL clubs in the comp is some image they that they are all still connect or something like that.

I cant see that the other clubs actually want them in the come. 8 is a good number.
