Ryan Garthwaite heads to Noarlunga in 2022.
Having spent the last five years at Tiger land, key position player Ryan Garthwaite will provide the Panthers with plenty of options at either end of the ground.

The Corowa product played 14 AFL games for Richmond having made his AFL debut in Round 13 2018 against Geelong.

The 23-year old also played in the Tigers thrilling 2019 VFL Premiership.

Taken at pick 72 overall in the 2016 draft, Garthwaite said he is looking forward to joining the Panthers and believes it will be a great fit.

"I chose South Adelaide because I felt like it was the right fit for me and the position I want to play."

"The coaches and players are all good blokes and being a country kid I enjoy that aspect of it."

"I’m bloody excited to come over and meet everyone, get stuck into training and crack in next year."


South Adelaide General Manager - Football Brent Reilly is really excited to see what Garthwaite will bring to the Panthers.

"Ryan is a quality player who played his junior football as a forward and his AFL career predominantly as a defender."

"We know he kicked over 100 goals as a junior in Corowa, so we are keen to see if he can provide us another target up forward along with Sam Overall."

"At 192cm Ryan is a good size and is strong aerially and will be a great fit for the club."

"We've been really impressed with his leadership and he will drive high standards within the playing group."

Also , as recent history suggests, South Adelaide seems now to be a destination cub for de-listed AFL players still harboring an afl dream. Especially if you're a ruckman or Kpp.- you are one step away from being rookie listed or picked up in the ridiculous pre season afl draft.

Maybe Centrals could solve this problem by setting up/getting access to a training base close to the city? Then these hesitant travellers would only have to make the trip once a fortnight.

That's a very creative approach if true and would certainly appeal to prospective recruits.

Flinders University would have set criteria for applicants, and courses come at a significant cost. How does South (if this is what is happening) get around that?

Yep,-mortal sin encouraging recruits to build a life for themselves post football with a Uni course.... in some cases it has been simply a matter of a player transferring his Uni studies from interstate to Flinders Uni.
Its an incentive our club can use rather than throwing a pile of cash at them... or finding a recruit a job where he is paid ,but doesnt have to work.....which was how we lost one potential recruit this year....

To be fair I first saw that graffiti in the dunnies by the main Theatre there by the library at Flinders, written he other way around in 1990...

used to be some quality social commentary written on the walls of the university crappers around Adelaide back in the day before the PC police took over....

Well done to South, although it's still hazy as to what inducements through a public university could be used to get Victorians across, that other SANFL clubs can't do. Or maybe the partnership/sponsorship between south-flinders is part of an overall package and South are ticking all the boxes.

What is not in dispute is they have had good success in the past 3-4 years in getting hold of recently de listed AFL players, still with plenty to offer.
In contrast, some clubs, Centrals and Sturt come to mind, have hardly picked up anyone in that category.
Different clubs have different recruiting strategies, but the difference is stark.
