ZebraLight - H501w Headlamp Neutral White

This little baby had served me well. Three brightness settings, the brightest being akin to a car's headlight

Decent battery life. Compact and hands free.

I question its durability though. It took a beating sitting in the top pocket of my backpack for six months and now the on button doesn't work so good - only powers the brightest setting.

Would get another one though, but take better care of it next time.

Personally, travelling light is the key.

Must haves:

Swiss Army Knife - including 2 blades, screwdriver, corkscrew and bottle/can opener!

Mag Lite torch - I had 2. They took an absolute thrashing and still work good as new.

Cutlery, bare minimum being a spoon.

Compass

Waterproof cover/bag for your passport.

Lighter/Matches

Small pot with a compact gas trangia

Camelback

Waterproof jacket/pants + spare plastic poncho (mine's a bright green coopers poncho!)

A small micrfibre absorbant towel

Doing at least 2 plane trips a year either overseas or domestic with the missus and three kids, I find this baby invaluable !



Nothing worse then having to move crap around bags at check in, especially with a tribe in tow.

Being the sort of person that is wearing a belt 95% of the time, this little ripper was perfect to stash the passport, cards and cash as it sat nicely next to my frank and beans.

Ok - When I go on another longer holiday, i'd be keen to buy an Ipad, reckon they would be really handly. Travelling through Sth America, so many Cafe's, hotels etc had wifi.

it would beat internet Cafe's thats for sure.

Was given it as a pressie and now it goes almost everywhere in my bag. Perfect size for a girlie and got everything I need...scissors, tweezers, screwdriver, bottle opener...let the party begin

I'm getting a netbook for my trip to Adelaide as well as looking into one of those pocket camcorders (like the look of the Kodak ones at the moment)

I don't own, want or need a mobile phone so I reckon I should be able to use a netbook for Skype, email, pm's on here to contact people while I'm there and I can store video/photo's to free up sd cards and camera memory etc. and it's something I'd still use back here after the trip.

Yeah portable travel scales.

Last trip to Thailand with the kids, we only had 2 check-in bags, and 4 carry on. Very light travellers, hence why we tend to monitor the weights for the return home (luckily they don't measure my beers guts from excess Singha)....

Sounds like a plan! I reckon the only thing you may not be able to do with the netbook is run a video editing program for your pocket camcorder - may not be powerful enough?

That's ok, as you've seen, I'm no photographer so editing videos is unlikely to be an improvement but if I do need to do anything to them it can always wait til I get home to the main PC. I should also be able to upload stills photos, if nothing else, to something like webshots as a backup in case anything breaks so I won't risk losing the lot.

Took this baby with me through Africa and looks like it will come in handy for SE Asia too. Takes up the same amount of space as a really, really thick guidebook, but is light and just so goddamn convenient. Takes the hassle out of making sure you've always got enough bottled water by your bedside everynight and negates the cost of always buying your water.

Can get them at the purifier shop on Kensington Road. Those UV steri-pens seem all the rage, but I've seen first hand that they are about as durable as a wet paper bag.

A couple of really cheap little bits. They weigh almost nothing and take up virtually no space but can be very, very handy...
A travel clothes line

...and a universal sink/bath plug...
