Chris & James Gowans Appreciaton Thread

by Big Phil » Fri Aug 31, 2012 3:13 pm

I know it was posted in the Player Movement and Retirements thread, but in light of the Gowans' Twins confirming their retirement at the end of this season, I think it is fitting to have a thread dedicated to two brilliant footballers, wonderful characters of the game and two of the most passionate blokes you could ever meet...

Well played gentleman, well played =D>

Lucky I work in Aviation - I have plenty of sick bags to hand around!

Seriously well done to both of them even though as oppostion supporters we find them painfully annoying!

Well it should be an interesting Round 24 match at the Ponderosa. Both Gowans retiring and Alleway's last minor round game for North. Ironically Alleway's first ever North game was a trial match against Centrals under lights in 2006. He got into a push and shove with both the twins at one point and then late in the game he landed badly on his ankle and missed the first 15 minor round games!

I've really enjoyed watching & hating these two angry brothers over the years.

Well done to the Gowans twins on great SANFL careers and the million or so premierships they won.

In my opinion, they helped boost the profile of the league as it could have become less relevant. When the Power and Crows were both going deep into finals, these lads kept giving Cornesy and KG a reason to talk SANFL. Great characters, anyone who hasn't spoken to them off the field should do so, they are rare men who make you feel like you've been mates forever within a few minutes.

On the field, I think their talent has been forgotten a little behind the records, novelty factor and the antagonising they do but few were better at winning the ball and none (IMHO) used the ball on both sides so well. Far less talented played many years of AFL, we were lucky enough to see them week in, week out for over a decade.

Fingers crossed Central get a project underway to have 2 identical grandstands so they can have one each. ;)

Well they seem like top blokes off he field. But certainly they tried their best to be w@nkers on it. Probably more than succeeded too on numerous occasions. One will be remembered for a certain king hit in the Granny. Haven't seen anything like it since Granger and Sims. Well done and good riddance ;)

Because Shane hit James off the ball first, wasn't it?

Hard to quantify just how much success over the last 12 years can be attributed to these two but the evidence is heavily in their favour. Favourite moment though had to be during a trial game in the Clarko era when they were playing up and he dragged them both at the same time, much to their disgust:lol:

As a collective unit - difficult to think of another pair, or individual for that matter, that shared so much success with a team over so long a period.

And to think they will only experience one more Premiership ;)

It's been very entertaining (and often frustrating) watching them both over the last 12 years.

I'll never forget the hip and shoulder on the tosser who invaded Adelaide oval during that finals game a few years ago. Absolute classic moment IMHO.

The only players in the league that I'd have loved to share a beer with.
