Kane Stevens from Queanbeyan to West Adelaide.

Sounds like a quality recruit although not from the strongest of leagues.

Apparently Centrals were also chasing him.
Go you Redbacks!

Edited for accuracy.
Not all players go to the country for money.
Believe it or not some come from the country before they play at a league club.

There is alot more player traffic going from the country to the city

Not having a go at you, just sick of the one way traffic on here about players leaving for the money in the country.
Anyone would think that all league players started out playing auskick at their league club.

Get use to it mate, because it is fact.
Do you honestly believe if the Country zones were capped these quality type footballers would be leaving the SANFL?
I understand that the training requirements are alot less than the SANFL. Hence why the country must be governed.
E.G you train for 1>2 days and play once a week, you get paid for that.
E.G you train for 4>5 days and play once a week, you get paid for that.
Some of the payments I have heard are amazing, little wonder the SANFL standard is dropping every year.

Good luck with that plan.
There will never be a cap, been tried before and can't be policed.
The CFB has to admit that their points system is the cause of the inflated payments before anything will change.
League clubs are quite happy to recruit country footballers but when it goes the other way they squeal like a stuck pig, same goes for SAAFL clubs

What amounts are you talking that are amazing?

One ex South league player was being paid $1400/ game last season in the country- a lot more than he was getting at South.
Another who was a fringe League player but played mainly 2's...$1200/game in the bush..

I know that it is impossible to cap, but it doesn`t make it right though. Does it?
Of course League clubs will be happy recruiting players from the country just as a player would like to be recruited. Why wouldn`t a player want to further he`s career in a class above and then maybe move up to the top class i.e AFL if good enough..
The simple fact is that the Country league is paying way over, and the SANFL are helpless in stopping it.
I know of a few ex SANFL players recieving payments in the $600 > $1400 a game region.
I will not name the players, but I can assure you, this is no lie.
As I posted previously, some (NOT) all of these players would still have a lot to offer in our comp, but are being lured away by buckets of goodies.

There also used to be some prestige and a higher status in playing League football, not anymore thanks to your club (and 5 others)
Why is it wrong for country clubs to pay what they can afford (or even what they can't)?
Perhaps the SANFL clubs should look at how they operate.
Get rid of the reserves. Don't pay anyone under the age of 20 (as u said sell them the AFL dream)
Don't pay so much to interstate ex AFL recruits so that there is more to go around to retain local stars.
Of course country clubs will be happy recruiting players from the city just as a player would like to be recruited. Why wouldnt a player want to train less, get paid more and set up his family, pay the mortgage, buy a boat etc etc
I believe your figures on payments would be quite accurate

Well the dozen or so Country and Metropolitan footballers we got trying out at the Bay demonstrates there is still some prestige associated with playing SANFL football.

Not all will make it but some will stay on working bloody hard for a chance o play League Football.

The movement of players to Country and the Metro footy leagues isn't all one way and I bet Glenelg isn't the only club with a dozen or so hopefuls trying out.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

This is going to be awkward but I 100% agree with you about getting rid of SANFL reserves (would save the clubs some money). If a player doesn't make the league side he should be able to go back & play with the club he was recruited from for zero points. Most A grade comps around the state would be close to SANFL reserves level anyway, maybe just not the depth.
Would still pay players under the age of 20 though, if they are good enough to get a league game no matter what their age then they should get paid something.
Should also push the AFL to have a stand alone reserves comp. An 8 team SANFL would be a very high standard comp then.

If you don't think there are a lot of guys these days electing to play non league footy who are good enough then you know nothing. The issue isn't so much with the name SANFL blokes, although there are a few in that boat (Heath Lawrie a notable one). Blokes who have gone far enough for you to hear of them turned down bigger money many years earlier. The issue is the 17-20 year olds who aren't in line for AFL selection. The blokes who used to do a year or two playing reserves getting better before beginning a league career. Straight out of under 18s footy they are being thrown numbers like $800 a game. To train less. And get pissed after the games. With their mates.
