Would have been a steal if we could get him with a second rounder. Bulldogs wanted him at Pick 5.

This draft rule made me think a bit, how does it work exactly?

If the Bullies say 'Yep, we want him at 5' and Collingwood don't match it are we then forced to use that pick on him? and what happens if another club warms to him late, like Melbourne with their first two picks? can they grab him before we get the chance?

What if no other clubs 'say' they wanted him? does he go to the Pies for nothing or just enter the draft?

seems a bit of a gentlemans agreement i guess

Think you will find that the club that places a bid must then use that pick on the player. In this case the Bulldogs put up their first round pick so Collingwood must then use their first round pick otherwise they will lose him.

If no bids from rival clubs then they go with the last available pick in the draft.

I think it is they have to use their next pick, e.g. If Hawthorn said they wanted him (pick 19) Collingwood would then have to use pick 27 (or whichever their next one is)
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

was reading the live blog of this, and they detailed the process.

they started from pick 1, and worked through the draft order. with any of the bids, a team could "draft" a player. they are then committed to this pick. However, the father son or academy team can choose to "match" that bid, which means they have to put up their next available pick.

so for instance melbourne bid pick 2 on that sydney lad, and so would have had to use it to pick him up if sydney declined, but sydney matched it with their first pick (20? or something like that)

similarly, bulldogs bid pick 5 for darcy moore and collingwood matched that with pick 8

waterman for the eagles didnt get bid on, so he automatically goes to the eagles for their last pick

Darcy Moore would have been a steal with a second round pick, probably worth a top 10 pick by all reports. Still a good get by Collingwood.
