Yeah the one I went to, there was a nephew thats 10, but he has older brothers, so he's a tough little kid. The "MC" yelled out "This song is requested by (insert kids name)!!" and chucked on a Sesame Street song. The kid was heaps embarrassed and felt like the guy singled him out and was making fun of him. I was pretty tanked and people had to stop me telling him what a **** wit he was.

Soooo....no MC for us!

We have a few places we're looking at that do the whole thing, but after attending an awesome wedding in Streaky Bay over the weekend that was done differently, we're now looking into getting a venue, caterer, etc separately.

The only problem is we can't find anywhere that looks the way the missus wants that isn't a winery or a function centre that only does the full deal.

Does anyone know of anywhere that is rustic, where we could organise our own catering, bar, band, etc?

Cheers
I'm just starting wedding planning as well at the moment mate. Horrible pain it is. Feel free to send us a PM if you're stuck, we may have some of the same issues.

A lot of options depend on how many people you're intending to have, and whether its cocktail style or sit down. This seemed to dictate lots of our options for a venue. You can organise your own band almost anywhere, the grog and the catering can be more of an issue.

Al-Ru Farm may be one to try, not a winery but rustic still.

Gee, I'm glad I wasn't the only one to go thru this whole planning experience and not enjoy it!
We looked at Sunnybrae & Al-ru (thats the one at One Tree Hill right?), but we weren't happy with having to use the terms of the drinks/cocktail food package. We also looked at a winery (at Tanunda maybe) that we decided on, rang up to book two weeks later, only to find out that the owners had changed and they no longer did weddings...
We ended up just having it in her parents back yard, which was pretty awesome and we did all the alcohol, food, set up, etc.

I thought I heard that Al-ru had some financial issues? I thought I saw a Today Tonight promotion along these lines???

That could've been Sunnybrae. They had Channel 7 there the other week. Pretty sure the owners went bankrupt or something, and left a heap of people in the lurch for weddings.

Someones just bought it, and will honour all the bookings. So I think they open again soon. Hopefully they piss the ******* peacocks off though.

Yeah Longview was our first choice too. The drinks package was a bit of an issue. They claimed they dont so consumption, until I said we wouldn't use them if it was a mandatory charge, even for people not drinking. Within 5 minutes I had a glossy consumption price list. They're still on the list. The place is pretty good.

mine was under 15k... pretty special day... wife got her dress online for $160... looked a treat... ripper day, the beer taps stuffed up and everyone was getting stubbies or cans... so that was even better... no extra cost.

Thats my kind of wedding. My missus knows where to get the cheap dresses, so it should keep the cost down. The venue and foods whats gonna cost the most. Longview I think was $9-$10k...

I've never understood why people spend a lot on weddings, when the money could be useful as part of a deposit on a house.
It seems commercial propaganda is pushing the idea it must be a grand public event rather than the marriage of two people with just their close friends and family there to celebrate it.

My first marriage was in the West Richmond Methodist Church and the Church Hall, and the bride's uncle provided the two cars he owned.
It was "dry" as the bride and her family were Methodist, and I only invited my immediate family and a few friends.
The most expensive thing was the bride's dress - made of French wool lace and silk to her chosen design by a local seamstress.

My second marriage was at the Registry Office with only four close friends attending, and the bride made her own dress. (She used to sell dresses she made through some Rundle Mall boutiques.) The reception was at my medical rooms in North Adelaide with about 16 friends invited and cost about two hundred dollars for food and champagne. We told our families afterwards so they couldn't run a campaign to turn it into a circus.
