This is off the top of my head, but I reckon I am fairly close to the mark with the South team:

Cox
Collins
Linke
Hines
Bennett
Slattery
Schneebichler
Butler
Baynes
Keam
Mousley
Palmer
Earl
Brooksby
Clarke
Fry
Harradine
White
Hawkins
Bell

I think that Ron Hateley missed with injury.

I'll have a go at the Port team shortly.

Lost all my SANFL stuff when my old computer went kaput.

But here's the Port team anyway...

F: Paul Belton, Tim Evans, Mark Dawson.
HF: "Bomber" Clifford, Milan Faletic, Kym Curtis.
C: Bruce Abernethy, Mark Williams, Peter Hofner.
HB: Tony Giles, Greg Phillips, Ivan Eckermann.
B: Tony Hannan, Trevor Sorrell, Ian Bradmore.
R: 'Sticks" Dolan, Darrell Cahill, Brian Cunningham.
Int: Andy Porplycia, Greg Boyd.

Thanks for that. I had forgotten that Kim Kinnear missed out. What was his injury.

That means that a fantastic wingman from each side missed out. You couldn't have got two more different wingmen in style than Kinnear and Hateley but they were both execellent wingmen for a long time.

I always thought that Ross Agius was very unlucky not to play in that premiership. He had played in the second semi final and kicked the goal that sealed the match. Greg Boyd was preferred as an interchange player to Agius.

Hateley defintely missed with an (ankle) injury. That, and the changing wind, meant South never stood a chance.

Cheers guys I was trying to establish if Joseph Haines dad played in the 79 GF but it looks like he didn't.

Quite a few 200 game players for south in that team: Butler, Bennett, Brooksby & Palmer.

Was the Brooksby that played in this game Keegan's dad or uncle?

Rain and Greg Phillip's fist killed it off.

I think I fell asleep in the last quarter.

I was there but didn't recall that both Brooksby's didn't play.

Also I heard the South coach put the brakes on a pre game plan to go the knuckle 30 seconds before the Panthers ran out onto Footy Park.....

The Brooksby that played was Phil Brooksby, the right footed full back. The left footed Graham didn't play and overall didn't play nearly as much as Phil.

I have thought that Keegan was Phil's son, but I am not 100% on that fact.

But on the other hand there were a few Port players who were hardly household names especially compared with the 1977, 1980 and 1981 Port premiership sides. Having lost Russell Ebert, David Granger, Bruce Light, Peter Woite, Max James, Randall Gerlach and jack Spry in recent times, Port were expected to struggle in 1979 and in fact did for the first half of the season. I vividly remember North, who were at their lowest ebb in 70 years easily beating Port at Prospect in May of 1979. The introduction of Bruce Abernethy who had just turned 17 and the continuing improvement of 20 year olds Mark Williams and Greg Phillips were the main reasons for the Port resurgence.

On paper at the time, South were considered the better side. No one (other than perhaps the Port diehards) realised how good some of the Port youngsters were.

Weren't Centrals minor premiers and Port third?
Still is a fair Port team, scary to think that this was perhaps their "worst" team during the period from the mid 70s to mid 80's.

HB: Gary Mousley, Stuart Palmer, David Earl.
B: Stephen Keam, Phil Brooksby, Garry Clarke.

It wasn't the worst team of that period, 1983 was a lot poorer team. If the mid 80s includes 1985 that side would also challenge for that title but its saving grace were that a lot of the stars of the 1988-96 period who debuted around that time.

I reckon '85 was perhaps the worst Port side in that era, although with R Ebert still playing perhaps that automatically made it better than 79!

Without looking it up, in '85, I think we started to see blokes like Lum, Bald, Harvey brothers, Phelps come into the side. I"m not sure whether it was '85 or '86 when we were belted by Torrens (!) at Footy Park by about 15 goals.

Was also pre Hodges establishing himself, and Aber and Phillips hadn't returned from Collingwood by that time.

Did his knee in the qualifying final.

Tried to fight through it on the track but his knee locked up a couple of times and that was it.

Had surgery to remove cartilage/fix up ligament... on grand final day!
