Phil Smyth's Magarey Medal viewpoint..
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl ... 6993925164
I have thought for quite some time that the B & F in the SANFL should no longer called the "Magarey Medal". As to what it should be called ("Hammond" Medal perhaps), or how William Magarey could be continued be honored, I guess that's up for debate/discussion (but I would personally be against the leading AFL player with an SA connection being awarded the Magarey Medal).
As to the teams he selected, I thought it a little odd to overlook Ken Farmer and Bob Hank in these sides, but then realised his 1951 cut-off which seems a little arbitrary.

Re: Phil Smyth's Magarey Medal viewpoint..
pretty interesting concept imo. I think you would have to work out a way to have both SANFL and AFL players eligible to win it, which is difficult but i guess possible.
not sure i like the idea but i think he has a point about somehow awarding an honour to the best SA based footballer, would be great.
I think the Robran or Ebert medal would be the way to go

How about leave the Magarey as it is, and the AFL teams can make up some other medal if they want.
R.I.P. the SANFL 1877 - 2013

Yeah, leave the Magarey as is.
Don't mind the idea of a SA State of Origin team picked at the end of each season, much like the All-Australian team. Also don't mind having a medal awarded as Phil Smyth mentions - but it can't be the Magarey Medal.
Another thing they should consider is having SANFL games played up until 1986, or 1990, as "first class" and be counted in the same way as a VFL game is counted in the AFL history books.

Wonder what would happen if this was put to eight clubs to vote on...

But the VFL became the AFL and the teams that were in the VFL became AFL teams. Just like VFA teams became VFL teams.

That brings me to a pet hate of mine. The SAFA became the SAFL and then the SANFL in 1907 with all of the same teams competing. In the 1980s SA footy historians led by Dr Bernard Whipress state that all SA footy scores and records should date back to 1897, why then have we resumed only counting scores and wins between clubs from 1907. Who has made this erroneous decision?

Changing the Magarey!!!!
Possibly the worse idea in the history of print media!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why stop there!!
Lets hand Jay Schulz the Ken Farmer Medal
F**k it lets give the highest ranked SA AFL side at the end of the minor round the Thomas Seymour as well.
Ohhhhhhh a Centrals have just announced that they will be awarding their B&F this year to Justin Westoff...........................its just as relevant.
