Why didn't the Bloods win more premierships with that group of players?

Because they are Westies!

Seriously, the club is schizophrenic.

No season sums up the WAFC better than 1982 - top of the ladder after 16 rounds with a 12-4 record. They then drop five of the last six games and miss out on the finals when Central kicked a cricket score in the last minor round match.

West were head and shoulders above any other team in 1983, even Sturt.

Can anyone elaborate on what happened? Accident/deliberate? Suspension? Type of injury?

Luders led out and took a fairly routine mark, a couple of steps after he marked it S.Riley was running the opposite direction and raised his elbow which clipped Luders jaw and broke it quite severely.
Riley I don't think even got cited for it.
I saw the incident and it was definately a shocking thing for Riley to do BUT it looked like he hardly touched him both there and on the TV, must have just got him in the wrong spot.
Riley should have got many weeks for it.
I never saw Luders play another decent game again.

Hit him flush, late and looked real bad and it was graphically highlighted on TV but back then if the ump didn't get you (he saw it and paid a 15 metre penalty but no report) there was no trial by video. It came in after that incident.

That's right.
In the 85 prelim Geoff Morris and some other player tried to "square up" against Steven Riley and soon found themselves battling both Rileys. Only time I ever saw John Riley do anything untoward on a footy field.

What about Father's Day 1989?
S Riley & W Mahoney remonstrating, vision cuts to centre bounce, vision cuts back to Mahoney measuring his length on the turf, followed by Port thugs running in, next scene has JR in there looking after Bullett...

They were a good team alright...! 2003 was a good year.

But the team that left their mark on me was the sturt side of their golden era...!

Jack Oatey as coach....

The skills they showed were truly memorable....

Chessel, Bagshaw, Garret, etc.... My memory fades......

Truly the perfect team......

Port's golden era team must have been great also....

I was trying to think who Garrett was, then I thought of Bruce Jarrett :)

When I labelled West Adelaide 1983 as possibly the best team I've seen, I was referring to how any team performed over the space of 1 season. Obviously the Sturt teams of the late 60s and the Port Adelaide teams were better over a period of years. West Adelaide were awesome in 1983, booting everyone off the ground in ruthless fashion.

Sturt were a brilliant team, many great players assembled at the same time, and many of them great players in the history of the game. However, a fact that many don't recall about that Sturt team is over the 1966-70 period, they won 5 flags but were only minor premiers twice. Jack Oatey was a master at getting his team up at finals time, a little like a racehorse trainer.
