I was watching the one where the umpire pulled out the book and wrote his number down, Ive seen harder stuff not even get a free in my daughters netball.
Some people (and umpires) are turning Australian Rules Football into a joke, it'll be as soft as soccer if they keep going.
Its a riduclous rule that you can get a free for hitting someone with your head when they're not moving let alone getting reported for it, hope the SANFL doesn't turn into the joke that the AFL currently is.
Last year I saw a bloke almost get his arm ripped out of his socket while in a helpless position and the offender didn't even get reported for it.
This year I see a bloke get reported for having someone duck their head and run into him while he's merely trying to tackle him.
I love consistency.

What I saw was our ruckman, Trevor Cranston, lieing (or kneeling) on the ground, and a North player sliding or running into him, from in front, to the hed/neck area.

Cranston was pushed backwards about a foot, and didnt move for a fraction of a second, the people around us all feared for the big fella's health for a little while. Thankfully he got up and appeared all ok.

I said at the time, "he has to go for that, you can not do that any more". A few seconds later the umpire reported him. I have since confirmed that the SANFL will be taking exactly the same view as the AFL to head high tackles when a player is on the ground.

It clearly was a head high tackle, and i was honestly concerned that Cranston had a broken neck (at worst) or concussion (at best).

And I didn't even have a drink on Saturday and was perfectly side on to the incident, the Glenelg doofus sure as hell didn't start on the ground unless he defied gravity.

Give me a break, you'd be concerned about a broken arm or leg every time a player handpasses or kicks the ball then. My god!

I thought it looked ordinary from afar and wasn't all that suprised the book came out considering it appeared to be a high hit to someone with their head over the ball.
Precedent has now been set with the report so it will be interesting to see what comes of it at the tribunal.

All players/clubs/coaches have been told you can't tackle front on to a player who has his head over the ball......especially if contact is anywhere near to the head = Sporn can safely book his holidays for April...We'll see him in May

I saw the incident through binoculars and concur with Borat's description of proceedings.

I see a pattern starting to emerge here.
He'll probably get 4 weeks if one the 2 incompement fools that were out there with Richard Williams laid it.

yep once the player has possession and he "takes on the tackler" and in the process ducks his head it will be holding the ball.

the rule is slanted more in favour of the player who is first to the footy and wins possession but once he has possession the normal rules will apply.

Without seeing the incident the the umpire appears to be of the opinion that Cranston obviously was still in the act of gaining possession of the footy, hence why the free kick was paid and the report made for front on contact to the head

I can live with that, so long as the umpires aren't over officious, because rarely will both players get there at the same time, yet often both will believe they can win the ball ... Ie, accidental contact at times is inevitable and dare I say unavoidable?

I was sitting in the bird poo on the seats in the dilipitated grandstand with
1 NA barracker
2 GL barrackers
1 ST barracker
1 NW barracker[me]

MT79[GL] thought there was nothing in it
BAYMAN[GL] no comment
LIP[NA] thought it was reportable
NOD[ST] no comment

Managed to shoo away all the termites and saw this incident which was near the centre
CRANSTON was comitted to the ball and could not have seen what was about to happen
SPORN as any footballer would do was comitted to stop CRANSTON
CRANSTON dropped form a upright position to a lower position towards the ground.
SPORN could not properly tackle CRANSTON and braced himself to collide with CRANSTON.
At the point of impact CRANSTON was in a down crouching position in possession.
SPORN made impact with his hip and leg to CRANSTON in the head/neck region.
It did not appear to be a MALicious pre-meditated action, it was instinctive by SPORN.

Accidental head high tackle is my verdict.
The AFL/SANFL are deeming these tackles as illegitimate
Fortunately CRANSTON was not injured in this wedgied position.
Unfortunately SPORN will get 2 games under the new legislation.

More importantly PUNK is needed for the termites .....
