Ive never driven a horse before so I could be wrong but Michael Smith please give us a spell.
Surely if you're driving a horse [Raise the Hand] that goes a bit rough when out wide on the track, then you slide up quietly 3 wide down the back straight [600m out] rather than get pushed 4 and 5 wide around the final 2 bends when trying to wind up and go flat out.
ps. There was no rain so the instructions couldnt have got washed off the splash sheet. ;)

you knew it goes a bit rough but you still (i'm presuming) backed it

who would have given the driver instructions ? see the driver also trains it

G, mal told me that your an astute punter which i believe but i think on this occasion backing inexperienced horses that show a tendancy to hang/gallop/greeness etc as a punter your asking for trouble, i'd suggest without knowing that michael smith would be just educating the horse in fields so next time in it'll be ready to race properly & would also have matured a bit ;)

Your kidding bayman, it was an absolute slaughter last week, and even worse today, the stewards should have ripped up his licence for what he done!, but they keep letting people get away with these type of things and the standard of drivers keeps getting worser by day.

I didn't have a bet today > thought the fields were a disgrace, so didn't bother..

But I did back Raise the Hand last week and watched the replay again this week...

Just like you G - i've never driven a horse and have no desire to - too hard a job....

BUT - I watched (and backed) a horse at Mildura 2 weeks ago...
Renrow went like an absolute cripple around the corners.. in fact I reckon I would have got around the track better then it.. Daryl Douglas worked it out after 600m and made sure he didn't push it around the corners and just did what he could to hold it together.

M Smith doesn't want to do that.. He has a horse who is risky in his gate and he's not trying to hold it's head and ensure it's learning and developing.. He's too busy throwing reins at it and flogging it... That's not good or smart driving IMO.

By all means, educate it and drive it softly, put it 3 back the fence and teach the animal or work forward from the 800m and not bust it's guts too much > but galloping in 3 out of 4 runs suggests he and the horse aren't learning anything...
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined

Dont like doing it but have to agree with G on this one.(Just for the record my training and driving record is the same as G) But i would have thought 3W at the 600 cruise up outside the leaders by the 400m turn would then allow him to negotiate the 2 turns under a good hold and then let him go as they straighten up and most likely win. I realise they are not cars and i may be taking a simplistic and uneducated view of the situation. I look forward to the comments of the geniune horseman that use the forum.

PS I miss Mal on the forum. Does anyone have an update on how the race to 100kgs is going?
