Well done boys our Comp should be proud of your efforts this week.
Too right mate, the guys gave it their all and should be proud of their efforts. In the end, it was a steep learning curve for the majority of the playing group, who have played very little turf cricket in their careers. The standard of the competition was much higher than the previous Carnival in Adelaide, with all of the teams pretty much evenly matched, apart from the NSW 2 side who weren't quite up to scratch. Give them credit though, they battled their butts off all week and were a good bunch of blokes on the whole.
Congratulations to Marc Cossens for his selection as the All-Australian wicket-keeper. He was by far the best performed 'keeper during the course of the week, and his glovework standing up to the stumps to every bowler except for Vines had to be seen to be believed. His leg-side catch standing up to the pegs off Holland on Day 4 was nothing short of magnificent. Congratulations also to our vice-captain Shaun Holland, who showed great leadership batting at 3 for the last 4 days and bowled 1st or 2nd change with the heart of a lion. He accumulated 95 runs at the #3 spot and took 12 wickets, including an inspired 5/21 against NSW 2, and thoroughly deserved his A-A selection and baggy green cap.
Last but not least, special mention must be made to the skipper, Richard Marshall, for the way he led the troops over the course of 5 days, particularly after being dismissed for nought on both of the first 2 days. He led the way with the bat from there on, and with luck, could've turned his scores into big ones. Primarily, his mental application across the full 5 days, despite his own personal doubts after 2 days of competition speaks volumes for the man. The boys found out how hard it is mentally and physically to play 5 days of representative level cricket and will be better prepared in those aspects in Sydney in 2010.
Happy New Year everyone and all the best in your Club matches during 2009.
