Bar weight..

Postby Johno6 » Thu Jul 15, 2010 2:04 pm

Just curious as to what the average bar weighs for a gym bench press?

I think it's about 45 pounds in the old scale.

I thought you were talking about the reduction in size of Mars Bars and yet the price remains the same.

Olympic Bars (those used in weightlifting) have a mass of 20 kg.

Most decent gyms use those for Bench Press.

Can get some lighter Bars (haven't got the thick ends) that are 15 kg.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Correct, but it does depend what length the bar* is.

I understand that a 7 foot bar with olympic plate sized ends is 20kg.

But you can get 5 & 6 foot bars with the same end that come in a couple of kg's lighter.

It can be deceptive.

Real men don't include the bar haha!

I go to a backyard gym that has been running for years.

We have records, and get judged if we go for a record with the three white lights and all!

My best is 230lb which isn't much, as the gym record is over 400lb done by a 19yo 3 years ago!

Not sure what it is in Kilos??

If the bar is 45lbs, then I reckon I can push out a couple of reps of the bar itself. Not bad huh.

I never new what they weighed but they felt about right.

Divide lbs by 2 then subtract 10% is a reasonable approximation to get Kg.

Divide by 2.2

230Lb - 104.5KG (105kg was my old 1 rep max before I treated my shoulder like an amusement park!)

400lb - 181.8kg That's insane for a 19yo!!!

The best I've ever seen anyone do is a set of 5 with 150kg on the bar, so 170kg all up.

the best I got was 112kg (3 reps)

there is a bloke that trains at a gym down our way, think he can push out about 180kg
which is absoultely huge.
Ive seen a video of him doing it
the actuall bar is bending, its ridiculous.

112 is a good effort. I'd be bloody happ with 3 reps at that weight.

The bar was bending when I saw the 170kg.

yeah I was pretty happy with it.
we thought it was 117kg but 2 of the disks we had were a bit lighter then we thought. So had to take off 5 kg's
Mind you I think if I got back into doing weights I think I would be able to do more for sure.

Why would any one want to pick up a bar when you can get a beer in each hand. Some people are too bloody greedy.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.
