Hawke - the telemovie

Postby CK » Thu Jun 24, 2010 8:58 pm

To air next month on Channel Ten, this should be an interesting profile, touted as "warts and all" of Bob Hawke. Portrayed by Richard Roxburgh, with a support cast including Asher Keddie (Blanche d'Alpuget), Rachel Blake (Hazel Hawke) and Felix Williamson (Paul Keating), its one I'm very much looking forward to, having grown up having him as our longest serving Labor Prime Minister.

Yeah should be good, the one and only time in my life I voted Labor was in 1983 to put Hawkey in. What a contrast his government was to the inept rabble we have today.

I dunno, I rather picture our current Sports Minister on the job on a desk rather than Hawkey's Sports Minister as he did....

Will that make the telemovie????

What chance Felix Williamson steals the show as Keating?

Hope we see this famous Keating exchange with Hawke and Button, who was proposing a 110% tax deduction for contributions to a Sports Foundation...

"Now listen mate, [Brown] you're not getting 110 per cent. You can forget it. This is a ******* Boulevard Hotel special, this is. The trouble is we are dealing with a sports junkie here [Hawke]. I go out for a **** and they pull this one on me. Well that's the last time I leave you two alone. From now on, I'm sticking to you two like **** to a blanket."

I visited the Bob Hawke museum last month
Situated on North Terrace at the University [west]
As you walk in they have Bobs first motor bike on display
The one that he fell off and ended up in hospital
There are achives on Hawke and the ALP there
I thinks it open once a week[mid week ?], so pay to ring up to find out

The staff have told me that Bob is stoked to have this museum named after him
He has visited there a few times

I agree it felt like they had to cram it all in. If they didn't show an hour's worth of bloody ads it might've all fit

But should've been a two part series. I reckon the guy that played Bob was the same guy that played Roger Rogerson in Blue Murder too.

Quite entertaining, I switched off when both Hawke and Blanche were interviewed together after the movie. Keating is portrayed as a lot less patriotic than Hawke, is this a fair or unfair portrayal?

Might as well post it here, too...

Disappointing.

A collection of scenes searching for a narrative.

Should've either made a mini-series where they could explore stuff more.

Or focused the story more. Hawke v Keating. Too much was skimmed over.

Some of the out-of-era dialogue particularly grated. C-U-Next Tuesday? Leave that to Sex & the City where it belongs.

One-note caricatures didn't help, especially Keating.

Bob's larrikinism strayed into parody a little too often...

I agree with you MP - disappointing. The highlight for me (before I turned it off) was the scene where an old paper $10 note was banged down on the bar. It probably bought a round of drinks back then too! ;)
