Mate, the most antisocial thing you can eat on Good Friday - whilst developing good hard fat-clogged arteries - is a bacon double cheeseburger. Apparently the ingredients of this little heart-attack inducing wonder means that 75% of the world's population cannot eat one on Good Friday.

Sounds good then.

Not allowed to eat a certain food on a certain day? FFS, what type of cult is this?

It's a Roman Catholic thing eating fish on Fridays but specially on Good Friday!
That's why seafood wholesalers & fishmongers ALWAYS jack up their prices round that time.
It's best to pre-order any seafood coz on that day all the Micks have bought out the shops
leaving only a few sick looking sewer sucking prawns at best!

just did not want to get flamed for mentioning it... what's wrong with each to their own... as i said before those non believers are only to happy to get a day off of work for Good Friday (even if it is their short day - btw aren't you a lucky sod to have a "short day") - i understand in this day of multi-culturalism that our religious holidays/beliefs are being debated/criticised, however I still believe (and its just my opinion of course) that the majority of australians who are of religious belief follow christianity as a rule -which again I believe is a good grounding for all peoples through life - jmho :)

Churchies in the area absolutely hate it, they think every fool and their dog should believe in some made up fairy tale.
I cop an ear bashing from them every time so make it smellier and bigger meat every year.
In short its my little statement to let some wowsers in the area know that its a free country and if I upset one person that is of the same denomination that stole my father from his mother then its been a good thing or tell me Im going to hell or am evil for not marrying the mother of my children then its a bonus.
Also public holidays are great for a get together and a BBQ, as to what I get from it?
Same I get from going to the pub and having a few drinks with mates or any social event but it has an added plus as stated in my first sentence.
Thought it would have been obvious. Not sure what North supporters has to do with it mt79 but if you expect that we like spiting idiots and enjoy sociable occasions with friends and family then yes you're correct.
I cant understand what Glenelg supporters would possibly have to gain from comments like this?
Well said Wedgie.
GLENELG SUPPORTERS i mean really what else would we expect

And what absolute bullshit that a majority of people are believers in Christianity. Honestly, illusions of grandeur these religious folk.
And dont give me the census result as a reasoning as "Christianity" also includes all the loon sects. Most people I know that tick that box join me for a BBQ on Good Friday.

Lets get back on track of the original topic without bashing someone for their belief in living in a free country though.

Australia Day, always a good day of cricket, had some ripper days at Adelaide Oval, is it better having a one dayer or a test for the entire period around it though?

I know you're being sarcastic here Wedgie, but don't go dragging the likes of me into it!
Yeah, I do come from a Mick background but I'm pretty open minded eh!
...& I love my Bays!

However, I do eat fish on Good Friday... The way I was brought up!

Why not mate?
If a Glenelg supporter can generalise "North supporters" as one person's opinion then surely a North supporter can generalise "Glenelg supporters" if its 2 people's opinion. Im sure you see the point Ive made here be it sarcastic or not.

PS I'll eat fish on Good Friday if a nice Snapper on the Weber has been done, I'll eat anything, I don't discriminate! ;)

Life's to short for spite....no issue with having a Barbie on Good Friday personally...just dont get the spite business, not my style....they also have no right to tell you what to do....

Not all churchies preach not eating meat on Good Friday, my parents are very religious but we never gave up meat on Good Friday

Always prefer the Test match! Tradition was Boxing Day in Melbourne, New Years in Sydney and Australia Day in Adelaide. A one day match doesn't quite do it for me. Always had good memories of coming down from the country as a kid and staying with Nanna and Poppa in North Adelaide and going to the Test match during the day and walking to the golf course to watch the fireworks at night.

These days it's usually a BBQ listening to the Hottest 100 with the cricket on one tv and if another tv is available, the Australian Open Tennis.

Agreed, I don't have the spite, I cause spite in others, they'll never learn, bloody ignorant morons.

I should have been more specific in my original post too, instead of saying "any religious person", I perhaps should have said "any hardcore religious person", you know the sort I mean, the one that actually attends church every week or listens to Guy Sebastian, or worse both! :?
I don't think of people who don't attend church and/or carry on like a two bob watch as religious, me bad.

On Good Friday, the only way to cook your fish is to deep fry it in 100% beef lard.

I'll start off be saying Australia Day to me means the coming together of friends and family, having a few beers, throwing a snag or 10 on the bbq and eventually watching the Aussies destroy whoever we are playing in the cricket. my only beef about the day is that we don't have the Australia Day test anymore.

I said to some of my mates last year at the cricket, when i see that flag get hoisted up and someone belting out OUR anthem i get goosebumps and i am filled with immense pride!

I'm going to try and keep this speech less political as i can. I know some members of my community may not like what i have to say, but to be honest (my opinion only) to move forward we need to acknowledge the past, and move forward together.

pies, beer, mates, australian culture (movies, art, sports), having a laugh and getting smashed.

I like the idea of the ODI - it has more of a carnival atmosphere to it which is great for Australia Day.

In the end it wouldn't bother me, as long as there is cricket Adelaide Oval for me to watch whilst drinking copious (unfortunatley only mid-stregth & ridiculously expensive) amounts of beer! :drinkers:

A common scenario for country folk - the Test match was always a big thing for the country members and I think a bit of tradition has, regretfully, gone out the window.

The counter view (also valid) is that of blink - it also is "the one day" that the Australian ODI side plays in Adelaide each year, which makes it a bit special too.

Either way, there's international cricket at Adelaide Oval on the national day - and that's something the other states wouldn't mind having, I'm sure.
