I think Jimmy is a good caller.
He puts oomph into his finishes.
He tries to predict how the race will pan out in the early+ middle stages.
With horses travelling between 1800-2600 mtrs they occupy
the same spots in the run most of the time so Jimmy likes to speculate in the run.
Some callers just call the race and are boringish.
Sure he gets the in the run predictions wrong occasionally but in general is right.
And yes he gets excitable by the winning post but thats OK.

I have had many chats with Jimmy and he is a reserved and approachable chap.
I reckon he does a good job.

i believe that callers should be calling what is happening and not what they think is going to happen.

it may well be but if you are at home listening to the race you dont want jimmy calling some horse the winner 100m out and it ends up not running a place. his job is to call the race as it happens not try and predict it.

Do you want him to end up like Happy Hilton???????????????? who is a complete and utter DH

Have done a little work with Jim in the past, and agree he is a very approachable and helpful bloke. Would also agree that, at times, he makes a lot from very little. I would rather his style, however, that some of the callers that make the whole thing sound a complete monotone with no highlights.

The less said about Hilton, the better. Any time he is on one in a race, you can pick it a mile off (it is mentioned constantly, even when 10th at the 400), and his behaviour, at times, off course when a punter is no example to Sky in the least. Hilton - take a bit of advice. People DO know who you are; you don't have to remind everyone. Most of us would like to think that you would have a little more decorum than you have displayed at times to the public. Like it or not, your behaviour DOES reflect on your employers and at times, it is NOT professional. One night I recall at Globe had to be seen to be believed.
