Is it time for a 10 team in the SANFL?

Postby Navy2005 » Sun Jan 07, 2007 11:53 pm

Hi guys just wondering what people thoughts are about a tenth team/club coming into the SANFL?

Personally I think it would be a great thing for the competition. A tenth team would eliminate the bye round and inject interest and cash flow to all of the clubs with more cash from the additional gate takings. The main question would be where would a tenth club be based. I don't think that there is the funding for regular interstate trips with the existing nine clubs.

I therefore think that a team should be brought in from the Mount Gambier region it boast the population to support a SANFL club. There are good facilities already on hand ie some of the Western Boirder Football League grounds are excellent. It would also have access to several close by competitions from which to draw players from.

What are the other opinions out there?

Modbury has the best case to be the next side into the SANFL, massive growth feeder areas of Golden Grove and Greenwith would make for a good complex on the Ridgehaven oval, current home of the Modbury Club.

If the Hills/Mt. Barker council go ahead with building a new sports complex like they have mentioned, then it could be possible for a Hills based side to join. Not sure how the zoning would go though as both Sturt (southern hills) & Norwood (northern hills) share the Hills area and no doubt both of those sides need as much a recruiting zone than ever, the way they're going at the moment.

If you ask a Mt. Lofty supporter, they would tell you they could be the tenth team!!!

No need for a tenth side just to get rid of the bye. I wouldn't be against Sturt moving out to the Mt Barker/Hills region though and establishing themselves there.

Wouldn't suprise me, sounds stupid enough to come out of his mouth. WTF would Woodville run on then?

Ive always liked the idea of a Crows team coming comprising of their AFL listed players that don't get a game and make up the numbers with juniors. Would be near the bottom of the table, would get rid of the current hassle of players going in and out of other SANFL clubs and would spark some interest from some of the Crows fans who wouldn't normally take an interest in the SANFL. Do the same with the Magpies in regard to the Power also.
10 teams.
Bigger Crowds.
Wont be dominant.
Less interuption for other SANFL teams.
No byes and instead of a bye get to see my team flog a team in Crows colours.
No current recuriting zones eaten into.

Won't happen, too revolutionary for this state but something I'd like to see as no negatives and lots of positives.

Great suggestion. Only reason this hasnt happened already. Crows. If we had two SANFL clubs in the AFL this would happen automatically. Port players go back to Port . Norwood players go back to Norwood for example. Hey we could even have more than two AFL clubs up and running.

But we dont we have a corporation hell bent on defending its market share and profit. And Port.

This SANFL/AFl relationship will never work whilst crows are in the AFL. They have no link to the SANFL. Let us not forget crows only invented to stop Port getting into AFl independantly. Mission accomplished. Now what do we do with them.??? Cos they have the market now and they dont want to share.
