So is he playing for free, or do the dogs have room to fit him in under their salary cap?

If he plays twos he'd only be costing $100 a week and I'd imagine he'd be on basic matchies if he ever made it to the ones. That would've all been explained to him when they talked. He'd only take what they'd already budgeted to pay someone else already.

No salary cap implications what-so-ever.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Would he be doing this if the Dogs were bottom?

Just a natural though for someone I would have thought. I expect Luke McCabe felt similarly when he returned. I guess in the end it comes down to how much confidence he has, whether he's happy to play out the year in the 2s if he can't crack the top grade and whether he'd rather not know if he still had it, or be shown up a bit. Needless to say, he won't be remembered badly if it goes pear shaped. Steinberner isn't remembered for the last stint he had where it didn't go so great.

What does this decision say to the Juniors at Centrals that have played ressies or league all year. Also doesnt do much for Junior development at a club where Junior Development is already poor.

16s and 18s struggling this year. U/15 Country Development squad well below par this year (didnt have the best players picked or wanting to play as well as most players being played out of position, went goalless in their last game). When Scott Stevens states that over 75% of Centrals League players are a product of their local leagues and Junior squads then things arent all as good as it may seem long term at the Ponderosa.

Surely you are not saying that the inclusion of one player (a player who has played in eight premierships, given wonderful service including being a former club captain) is going to have an impact on junior development at the club?? The same effort will be placed into developing juniors as is currently occurring. Sladey's return does nothing to change this.
Also, it just adds competition for onball spots at league and reserves level, which surely cannot be a bad thing. Sladey knows that he will only gain a league spot if his form warrants it. No favours will be given at all. However, given the loss of O'Sullvan for what is likely to be the full season and other injuries sustained at Central this year, Sladey is a useful backup.

Agreed. Unfortunately I think Chad's about a 1% chance of playing this year.

I think the guidance that Sladey can provide in the reserves to the younger players, as well as those pushing towards a spot in the side for the finals, would also be invaluable.

Agree wholeheartedly. His experience will be invaluable, even just on the training track if not in matches.

yep will be absolutly invaluable. the young ressies will learn about mental and pyshical preperation before during and after games. the value sladey will bring to blokes like schiller and fry will be worth another 50 reserves games

At the end of the day it's a decision/move that only needs to please one set of supporters .. If our club had a void to fill, and we had a much loved proven performer that wasn't long out of the game (like Stuey Bown [different circumstances I know]) I wouldn't have an issue with him returning so long as he was selected on form rather than anything else.

I would have thought this could only be a plus for the Dogs, if he's not playing well enough he doesn't get selected but mentors kids who look up to him and if he is playing well enough then it's a huge inclusion with oodles of September/October experience.

Just my $0.02 worth.

great post would be no different to bassett playing norwood reserves edwards or the roo having a run in the westies reserves and no different to what biglands has done at the eagles.

im sure all those teams supporters would be happy if that happened at their club

Dutchy, Heres an interesting article from last season,

TIGER SAM BACK ON TRACK

Yes, the rumour is true. There certainly was a pony-tailed defender running around Gliderol Stadium at the Bay on Monday night. But Glenelg fans shouldn't get too carried away, the sudden re-emergence of talented full back Sam Rudolph won't result in a sudden recast of the Tigers' back six.

Not even with his usual nemesis - Sturt spearhead Brant Chambers - needing to be quelled at House Brothers Oval on Sunday.

"I don't think Mark (coach Mickan) will be tempted," Glenelg operations manager Ken Applegarth said with a chuckle.

"Wayde Mills has been our full back and he's been a wonderful acquisition to our club."

Rudolph, who has spent the past two months trekking around East Africa, will still be a welcome addition to the depth at Brighton Rd in the lead-up to September.

"Sammy's only just come back into our group and he's a bit underdone," Applegarth said.

"The idea is that we will slowly start him in the reserves. He's got three games of the minor round left and everything will be assessed week-by-week from there."

Named at half-forward in the Tigers' reserves to confront the Double Blues, Rudolph hasn't entirely been ruled out of league contention, particularly if injuries arise. While some outside the club thought the lanky backman wouldn't be back in South Australia this year, the Tigers' hierarchy knew otherwise.

"We knew he was coming back but I don't think Sammy intended on playing in the 2009 season," Applegarth said.

"He only intended to do some physical training but through some encouragement he's decided to have a go in the reserves and see how it progresses.

"The club is certainly supportive of it."

A member of last year's SANFL Team of the Year, Rudolph has missed mixing with his Tiger team-mates, not to mention the camaraderie gained from playing through to last year's grand final.

"I had a chat to Sammy and he indicated that he had missed the game and missed his mates," Applegarth said.

"After the first night at training (this week) he said he had enjoyed it thoroughly, which was a pleasing response."
IF YOU WANT IT. COME AND GET IT.

mmmmmmmm.....................seems like the exact same situation as what is happening with Slade now.

I find it touching that supporters of other clubs are concerned that the doggies are about to break their usual team selection processes and upset the chemistry that has made them a dynasty over the past 10 years. True altruism

Change of heart from Slade, pulling out of the reserves side tomorrow and will have a kick with Gawler Central again...
