Thebarton Oval

Postby Sojourner » Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:49 pm

I noticed that South and Sturt are playing a trial game at Thebarton Oval, so are some of the other SANFL clubs prior to season 2007. I think it would be worth the SANFL looking into purchasing the oval outright, putting good lights in and setting it up as a Friday night footy venue, maybe even a venue for the first week of SANFL finals if the capacity could be worked out.

Thebby oval is a great venue for SANFL footy and with its central location would be a good spot for two sides to play their third encounter in a season. Naturally it would compete somewhat with Adelaide oval, yet it could well prove more cost effective for clubs to play there rather than Adelaide. The SANFL could always open a licensed club on the site and distribute the profits to all the clubs which could well add to the atmosphere as well.

Thoughts?

Thebby Oval has the potential to be a great SANFL Oval...
West Torrens Council are spending money on it, the SANFL don't need to.
If the SANFL did run it, they could potentially move SANFL Operations their on South Rd, with new Clubrooms & Gaming.

Why buy the oval when you can lease it from the council??? it would be very expensive considering the prime real estate it is on, why tie up all your cash in this, especially if it does not work?

Agree it could be used more though, enjoyed the bays/Eagles game there this year

neither the train or tram stop at Adelaide Oval...
Actually, even the Bus Stop is not that user friendly (too far)

Fair call Dutchman, however how much money would you want to spend on something which could one day be sold on you? They would want a few clauses in their agreement (like option to purchase) I'd imagine to know how much they could spend on the gound (or potential clubrooms, gaming etc)?

I think the SANFL are playing the smarter game, instead of buying it they're gradually getting the West Torrens council to do the hard work and put the money in.
The SANFL buying the oval is a good idea in theory but I don't think a Norwood or Sturt would be too happy if it was the difference between them in going under or not.

Exactly...sure they hire the Oval, but get a decent crowd and that covers all the costs while they dont have to maintain it, the council does, and the council arent going charge huge dollars as they want the Oval to be used and bring poeple into the area as its good for business

Its a bit like some clubs, for eg North don't spend money upgrading Prospect Oval whilst the council insists on hanging onto it but North are pursuing being able to buy the real estate where the grand stands/admin offices/changerooms/gym are. There's no point on spending money on something you don't own the land it sits on.

Yeah true, but obvioulsy most clubs/businesses would favour upgrading stuff on their own real estate.
BUT a club like North might soon be in the position that they'll have to spend more money to stop being called a business for tax purposes and might have to.

I am sure most supporters are happy to see Thebby Oval used.I personally would like to see the ground eventually developed as a neutral venue to become the home of SANFL football with state games and some finals games played there.

I think you are stretching it a bit, it would have to be closer to 3 :D

Seriously, I actually like Thebby a lot, and with some facilities reinstated, it would make a great nuetral ground, and the kids can actually kick a footy in the outer, or on the ground there.

Thebby would be good for SANFL games, junior finals and SAAFL finals. SANFL finals deserve a better venue

It could also be used a training location for state and state junior teams...

The ground shoudnt be wasted on Soccer (its terrible for soccer due to the location of the stands and the shape of the field)

Thebby Oval would be great for a few Eagles games each year and if the council force rates up too high at Woodville, would be great as a home for the Eagles. If other teams want to play on our second home ground, so be it.
