I'M NOT RACIST BUT.......

Anything!

Postby Armytank » Wed Jan 17, 2007 11:43 am

Wasn't it more that he was deemed to be inciting the crowd? The fact that he use the term "Pakistani's" made it become racial. Also is being called a "dog" taken as extremely insulting by a prodominantly Islamic Pakistan supporter? I personally don't think what he said was that bad, but different people take different thinks as insults and he shouldn't have been yelling to the crowd anyway.

Thats cool mate, I wasn't looking for agreeance, more for someone to enlighten me as to why those comments are deemed a racial slur so I can better understand?

POP! (Opens up a can of worms.)

What I think it relates to CP is the people of Pakistani origin feeling the "animal" comment in some way relates to the pigmentation of their skin, however,is Herschelle not of coloured origin?

Im with you mate, call me an animal if you like,it attacks me personally, but not my whole race/colour/creed.

In the report I read they didn't make any mention of him using the word "Pakistani's" ... Just that he'd been caught on stump mic saying to a teammate that "They (in reference to a section of the crowd) are a bunch of animals".

Agree that different people get offended by different things for sure.

According to a report in the paper I read, South African batsmen Herschelle Gibbs has been suspended for 2 tests for making racial remarks ... Gibbs was caught by the stump mic. referring to a group of Pakistani supporters as "a bunch of animals".

Apologies for my ignorance, but I hope someone can point out to me how this is a racist attack? Would it be no different to say a Glenelg player referring to Port/Central/Norwood/Whichever teams supporters as a "bunch of animals"?

I'm genuinely looking to be enlightened if I'm off base, but I just don't see any reference to or attack on the supporters status of race in the comment that he's made.

Was quoted in the paper that one of the South Africans (assuming it was Gibbls) allegedly said "you're a mob of F****ng baboons"

In regards to the initial post though, there's no question that there's a lot of people in this country whos allegiance is to their country of origin/heritage, not Australia.

I think this is due to the fact that children/descendants of migrants will always be cast as who they are by their origin. A person of Asian origin will always be called Asian first and Australian second purely by their look. Greek, Italian, whatever, the same. Not sure whether this is the "fault" of the parents or the Australian culture.

Interesting question MK. I don't think it is such a bad thing though. I think part of the problem is that the amount of sensitivity we are expected to use for just about any race related matter confuses things. I am in Japan, and I get called "foreigner" as a matter of course. I mean if somebody was to point at me and say "See the guy with the dark hair?" No one will understand who they are talking about, but "Foreigner"? No worries. In Japan people are just about always referred to as being some part of a category. At first I was surprised at there being so many generalisations made, I was brought up not to categorise people after all (as most Aussies/westerners are). But I am used to it now, Japanese even have a firm belief that a person's blood type will influence their behaviour. So I often hear phrases like "Wow, look at how neat she puts her shoes away, she must be A-blood type!"
So as for Asians and Greeks in Australia still being referred to by their ethnicity, I think we should all take a step back, everybody, and stop assigning so much power to these labels. If I call somebody Asian, it is because they look Asian, not because I want to denigrate them in anyway and I take each person as they come, regardless of colour or creed.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Too many wogs in this country have first allegiance to their parents birthplace rather than to Australia. I have nothing against multiculturism, it has done a lot of good, but people should let their old hatreds die, otherwise hand in your Aussie passport and piss off.

The whole Herschelle Gibbs 'Baboon' incident came completely out of left field...
Considering South Africa's impeccable track record of racial equality & tolerance!
  I'm not being racist but...
I'd put nothing past them Pakis doing anything they can to gain the upper hand!
Screaming 'Bigot' just because the fella's Afrikaan...
That Apartheid stigma's gonna haunt 'em forever & Pakistan's milking it for all it's worth!

You will ofcourse note my reluctance to enter this debate. However I confess I do agree with Mick, Snaggle, Centurion and others.

Oh and Wedgie, we are at different ends. You have symathy for the Serbs, I am more towards the Croations. Niether are angels but the attrocities of the Serbians seems far more severe that others.

Maybe I lean that way because I am a capitalist pig aswell ?

Whatever context Mr Gibbs phrased his words - he should've picked some better ones if he was going to express disastisfaction at the Pakistani section of the crowd.

Being of 'coloured' origin - he should understand the implications of using the words "babboons" and "animals" would have when directed in the direction of someone who's not white. Even if they were "acting" like a pack of animals.

Just to add a further mix into this conversation - I love it when I'm called a "white ****" or "cracker" by fans or players of Aboriginal descent.....

Imagine if I'd said the same thing...
