Sydney - stick it up your arse

Anything!

Love Melbourne, hate Sydney. Agree with Wedgie - Brisbane is nice but wouldn't even be on a par with Adelaide at night. The Valley has never taken off like it should.

Would only live there instead of Adelaide, nowhere else.

Melbourne is a great place and going ahead in leaps and bounds.

Gotta echo the sentiments for Melbourne, I love going over there and as with Punk, if I couldn't live here for whatever reason I'd be off to Melbourne (although WA is awesome too and would be a chance).

I'm off to Sydney in 3 weeks for the first time in about 15 years, and will be doing a fair bit of driving in a foreign city so bit worried about the traffic wrap you gave REB.

Having lived on the edge of the Valley for about a year and half now, I feel reasonably qualified to make a few comments.
The Valley is now a real mix of old and new -it has a history of being a poor inner city suburb, then quite alternative and now a pretty trendy nightspot destination for (mainly) Brisbane's younger set. It's carries the tag of Brisbane's 'Entertainment Precinct'.
There are certainly other places to go though -so there is choice.

There is a lot of development money being spent in the Valley at present and there is more to come.
Parts of it certainly remind me of Hindley St -other parts are newer and far classier.
It'll be tough to clean up the Valley completely -there are 2 main roads running through the middle of it, giving it a grungy feel.

I lived there 10 years ago and naturally gravitated towards it due to the alternative music scene & pubs etc. I liked it a lot, spent a lot of time at the Zoo and various markets but it was pretty run down and seedy - but there were enough signs it was going to be developed like Rundle Street was in the mid 90s and become a thriving cultural hub of nightlife, restaurants, 'alternative' retail outlets etc.

I went back last year and was amazed that it had barely changed at all! Empty shops were still empty (what is that McWhirters supposed to be?), nudey bars still there, still a vibe that it WILL be great... in another 10 years.

Looks to me like they have put all their money into developing the family-friendly Southbank precinct which had undergone huge development.

I went on a world trip a couple of years ago, hired a car in Birmingham, Glasgow, Zurich, Rome, Paris, LA, New York, Hong Kong and Las Vegas (among many other places, but these were the busy ones). I now don't care about any traffic in Australia, we get it easy - including Sydney. Try peak hour in Birmingham or LA and you will know what I mean!

Money no object, i would live in Perth.

AN amazingly attractive* city, millions of things to see and do, easy to get around and navigate, the Govt has plenty of $$ to spend so everything is brand new.

Hellova long way from anywhere else though...

Thanks REB, I'm off to Sydney in a couple of weeks for first real holiday in four years.

Agree Borat, Perth or Adelaide are the only two cities I could ever live in if I had to live in the city.

The reason Melbourne attracts all these big events and pumps them up is because without them it is a shit-hole.

I've lived in Melbourne for the past 12 years and it's brilliant. Mind you I live in the inner city and I think that's the difference. If you lived "20 minutes down the Nepean" you could be living in any outer suburb in any capital city in Australia.

Yes, Southbank been developed to the hilt!
Hardly go there though, but when I do it's impressive.

The top end of the Valley is where the change would be only minor -the Wickham St environment is grotty and needs an overhaul.
The train station is going to get much needed re-development.
As for McWhirters -not sure if anyone knows what's going on there...

The bottom end of the Valley is where most of the new development (Emporium) has happened -housing, restaurants and shops.
This part has some resemblance to Southbank.

haha, try Oxford street.

Cleveland in QLD is without doubt the nicest area in Australia, pitty the average for rent is around $480 a week, its nice to be able to stay with friends there. :D

Culturally we are a lot closer to Melbourne than Sydney hence we tend to rate Melbourne ahead of Sydney, myself included.

As Pseudo said, it is the Adelaideans with Sydneyitis that shit me the most. Fair enough, move to Sydney to better your career or whatever but give it a rest if you think you living a better life over there.

Going on that article it would seem a few of the contributors to this thread could write similar books.

I went to Sydney for a holiday a couple of years ago. It was a great place to visit, plenty to see & do & eveything was always open, which was great, especally when you're used to nothing being open on a Sunday like here in Perth. But I'd hate to live there. Way too busy & expensive. That peak hour traffic was a nightmare!

Just got back from a week and a bit in Sydney, first time back there in about 15 years and I'm seriously hoping it's the last ... Makes one think "there's plenty wrong with Adelaide but there's plenty right also!"

The cab and shuttle bus drivers all went to the same Kamikaze school I'd imagine, and what amazed me most was the attitude (in about 90% of the cases) of people toward their customers!

Staying at Darling Harbour, the scenery was about the only saving grace, but I seriously couldn't get back here quick enough and really can't understand the fuss some people make about that place!!
