SANFL vs Tassie State Game.

Postby Sojourner » Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:13 pm

On the last occassion that the SANFL state side played Tasmania the result was a loss to S.A.

What I wonder is why we have not had a rematch to give our guys a chance to even up the score?

Prior to round one this year, how about the SANFL take on the TFL at Thebarton and lets have a crack at restoring our reputation as the best state league! 8)

Bugger Thebby I'd love to go down to Tassy but it might be a bit hard these days with Tassy having 2 separate comps in the South and the North and a team in the VFL on top of that. Logistics might be an issue.

SA win loss record against Tasmania, including State of origin, 22-4.
Even up the score? WTF!!
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

The reason is that Tasmania have no state based comp any more. its all gone back to Suburban football. which is a shame some of their district cricket grounds still have the grandstands from when it was still running and are in much better condition than the Adelaide SANFL grounds.

Having just been to tassie for Christmas there are very few grounds I would call up to SANFL level.

North Hobart is one (former league headquarters)

Bellerive (Clarence) as home of tassie cricket & York Park (Launceston) as AFL home are Stadium Quality

Others like the TCA ground (Hobart) and KGV (Glenorchy) are getting pretty old.

Others are Amateur League standard at best.

That said a game between SANFL & Tassie Devils during one of the Devils bye would at least give us a state game of sorts.

Surely a bit demeaning having our State team play a VFL team?

Agreed - fact is Tassie Devils are a state team of sorts.

You could get the best 21 of all the SFL & NTFL leagues and Devils will trounce them

Phil, do you know if they used to use Queenbrough Oval in Sandy Bay? was in Hobart last week spectating at a cricket carnival and that was probably the best oval I saw there. cut into the side of a hill (like most of the place  ) and has a natural grandstand with the old school concrete terraces with a backdrop of Mt Wellington and now used by and Old Scholars footy club. Clarence Footy and cricket clubs still use Bellerive. Totally agree that the TCA ground is about to fall over its shocking for a place that has some nice historic stands didnt get out KVG but did get to Lindisfairne that place is built in the wrong spot. Also liked the Ground out at Newtown not bad for a suburb that was compared to Elizabeth Downs.

We don't want to have a state rep team play just another VFL team (one that didn't even make the finals in 2006). Not to mention the fact that the Devils are now aligned with some AFL club or other (Roos, I think) and so field many non-Taswegians on a regular basis. And no doubt not all of the best 21 players in Tasmania are in the Devils' squad.

So even though it'd be a little weird to have a league rep side playing a side that represented a state (but not a league), the answer to having a proper SA/Tassie showdown in the spirit of the enterprise, would be fairly simple: the Tassie selectors pick the best 21 players in Tasmania, regardless of whether they currently play for the Devils, NTFL or SFL.
