Parks Community Centre closure

Postby brod » Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:53 am

The closure of Park Community Centre in March 2010 due to the ceasation of State Government funding and lack of interest of City of Port Adelaide Enfield to provide any funding is getting some worthy media coverage. The lack of any sort of community consultation or future plan by State Government or City of Port Adelaide Enfield is the most dissapointing aspect of the whole saga

It's disgraceful. The ALP should be ashamed of themselves.

"Parks decision betrays Labor values":

Times change. In the mid 1990s, the then-Liberal Government closed the school, igniting fury from Mr Dunstan, who addressed a public protest meeting at "the Parks" as it is widely known.

It is worth recalling his words to the meeting. "This centre has been a social icon for Australia. To close it is not only stupid, it's a social crime," Mr Dunstan thundered.

Mike Rann, as the then-Opposition Leader, also had a few words to say at the time, calling it "a fundamental assault by the Liberal Government on the western suburbs".

Apparently the govt said they would now reconsider closing the Community Centre.

But i thought i heard Rann say the other night his government was determined to make tough decisions :? So now with this backflip does it mean they're not prepared to make tough decisions :?

I'm all for the centre not being closed, but this whole situation has just made this government look like a bunch of clowns!

Its quite an embarrassment for this state that we voted them in again.

Would be an absolute disgrace if it did happen.

What shits me is that the facilities in Adelaide we have now can't keep pace so heaven forbid if things start getting closed. Do the Government think that these people will dissappear or something?

I use the gym there because it's not far from my work so I can go during lunch. Yes, the facilities are a bit dated but the staff are great and the equipment is as good as most places going around. I was really disappointed when word first spread around the gym that it would close down. I've been going to that gym for around 6-7 years! I signed a petition there last week against the closure.

It's still not clear to me whether the council run facilities (fitness centre, library, and something else) will get a reprieve too. I'll ask the staff there next week what the latest is.
In between signatures .....

No that whats really embarrasing is if they get in again. Lets just work through some details about Kev and Mike.

1. Super increased for MP's - What a good idea, I know the idea of actually sitting in parliment for 2 days a month can really
hurt your ability to plan for the future.

2. We are still looking at spending money on a massive adelaide oval upgrade considering where else that money can go. Hmmm where do you think...hmmmmmm.

3. 3700 public service jobs to go. Although I would acknowledge that there is plenty fo dead wood around. I hope they are aware that whats going to happen is that skilled workers are going to take a payout and then 2 weeks later pop up in a consultancy probably doing the same work. Based on 1 this is pretty funny.

4 Parks Community centre. Based on the above looks a bit funny now.

Right now thats a start. Based on that if we vote them in again then SA should be banned from voting for 20 years. Victoria should nomimate our next state government because we simply cant handl it.
Read my reply. It is directed at you because you have double standards

I wouldnt think that it is all over yet..Rankine still stated on friday that "we may still sell the land".
All that the SA Govt (through Jennifer Rankine - not Rudd or Foley who wouldve been there with bells on if it was a great announcement for the photo shoot) have agreed to is put things on hold until Local Govt elections in Nov.

Everything else that requires government funding might have to close, but at least AO is getting re-done.
It's all the SANFL's fault.
