A faulty set of scales at Monday's boxing weigh-in has thrown the competition into chaos before a single punch has even been thrown.

Boxers who had weighed themselves on the faulty scales were forced to unnecessarily shed weight in the sauna before it was discovered the scales were inaccurate by almost 1500 grams.

In scenes described by Australian Commonwealth Games spokesman John Gatfield as 'unprecedented' and a 'massive fiasco', the scales were checked with a 50kg weight after several boxers had already weighed in, the scales registering 51.43 kilos.

I know what you mean - after seeing the unknown Aussie girl win yesterday I thought the tennis must be an amateur or under-23 comp like some sports have previously been in Olympics/Comm Games ... but then I saw Hanley and Rodionova were representing us in the mixed doubles.

Australia has claimed three gold medals on a successful opening night at the track at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Tuesday.

Anna Meares won Australia's first cycling gold of the meet in the women's 500m time trial before Scott Sunderland took out the 1000m time trial and Jack Bobridge the 4000m pursuit.

In total, Australia won five medals with also a silver and a bronze on a dominant opening day.
