Watto: No, would either under-bowl or over-bowl himself, probably lets himself down a bit with his on-field antics.
Katich: No, too old.
Hussey: No, too old.
North: No, needs to consolidate a spot before being considered.
Haddin: No, injury prone, ageing.
Any of the bowlers: No.

Like it or not, Clarke is really the only option that we have to take over the reigns, if he doesn't, it means we've wasted the last few years blooding him.

Not sure how you can be too old to be skipper but anyway, I would have thought an experienced level headed player like a Katich/Hussey would be far better option than Clarke who is ordinary under pressure. I don't really care if we have wasted time blooding him, its costed us a lot of games, and personally wouldnt mind that coming to a halt pretty soon.

Because they'd only have a year or two left in them. Has Pup ever captained a test? I don't recall him doing so.

Some people have short memories
Clarke has a recent record of 1 win 2 losses when Ponting was missing in action

B4 those 3 games his record as a winning skipper would shock a few people

Hussey's spot in the side can't be compromised even more by having him as the back up captain IMO. If he was (c) material he would have been made VC 4 years ago.

Katich doesn't play one dayers anyway

I'm still drawing a blank on my question of "who else".

If Clarke had to captain in a test those guys are close by anyway for a second opinion

Would love to see Shane Watson captain the Australian side!
Iv been a critic of him, but I think he has matured alot and is ready to take on the job as captain

CK, would opening the batting, being the 5th bowler AND captain be one thing too many?

I agree he seems like the next best option realistically but that's my only reservation on Watto. That plus has he captained in lower grades?

I think it has to be someone who plays tests AND at least one other form of the game (rules out Katich).

Yeah it possibly could be too much! But he seems to be someone who loves the pressure and expectations on himself!

He could always drop down the order to be a calming influence on a younger side with Hughes, Ferguson and Khawaja!

No doubt he has improved in many areas, I think he's body language and demaenour lets him down a bit still. Did you see his reaction the other day when Ferg didn't quite get to the chance near square leg, not a good one, especially with 50 camera's around the ground.

and the problem with that would be?? So you'd rather sacrifice one or two years under a under-performing inexperienced skipper and loose matches rather than change to an experience skipper every couple of years?

Each to thier own I guess, just my thoughts on the issue. We could go on forever!

I think Hussey is one bad game away from being dropped let alone having 1-2 years left.

That's if he even makes the first test side! (which he probably will but he is on thin ice - not the position you want your VC to be in).

Yeah it is a case of each to their own. I think that Katich and Hussey aren't exactly setting the world on fire atm. I do think that Katich deserves a few failures though before his spot becomes under jeopardy.
I don't think that you are wrong with any of your points, we just lack a consistent performer to take the reigns IMO.
Good debate though.

Australia's full-time selector Greg Chappell has given Nathan Hauritz some encouragement, declaring that he would not favour an all-pace attack for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane. The Gabba traditionally offers significant assistance for seamers and in a recent Sheffield Shield match, Hauritz bowled only two overs for New South Wales as the fast men accounted for all but one wicket in the game.
