BITE PUT ON MELBOURNE
Adelaide ETSA Bite began the new Australian Baseball League season off in style with a strong 9-1 victory over Melbourne Aces at Norwood Oval last night (Thursday).
With solid starting pitching from Paul Mildren and a complete batting display, the Bite looks like it will be a contender in the inaugural ABL season.
Mildren threw seven innings, giving up six hits and no runs, while striking out five batters in a dominant outing, justifying his selection for the opener.
Adelaide scored its first run in the second inning, after Mathew Smith walked, advance to second on an error and came home on Brandon Bantz' single.
An explosion of runs in the fourth inning saw the Bite take control of the game, as Dan Wilson and Bantz walked, James McOwen laid down a perfect bunt, Jeremy Cresswell knocked in two runs with a single, and Ben Wigmore plated the fourth with his second hit of the night.
After Adelaide scored single runs in the sixth and seventh frames, Melbourne finally scored in the eighth, when Andrew Russell's hit set up the Aces run, which came home on a double play.
Wigmore put the icing on his four-hit performance with a two-run home run in the eighth inning.
Game two starts at 7pm tonight, with a double-header on Saturday, from 4pm with the night cap at 7pm.
Adelaide 0 1 0 4 0 1 1 2 x - 9
Melbourne 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 - 1
Hits: Melbourne – Russell 2, Ijyiun 2, Wearne, Davies, Karlsen, Hashimoto;
Adelaide – Wigmore 4 (hr), Bantz 2, Cresswell 2, Latimore 2, McOwen, Wilson.
WP: P. Mildren; LP: A. Blackley.

Adelaide Bite - 9 (Great come from behind win)
Melbourne Aces - 1 (let an early 3-0 lead slip)
Vetern pitcher Darren Fidge threw 8 complete frames including a strike out of all 3 batters in his final inning...
The Bite sink their teeth into the Aces again and now have a 2-0 series lead...
Game 3 and 4 to follow in a Double Header tomorrow with the first game at 4pm, followed by a 7pm contest
Somewhat dissapointing crowd yet again with 1,539 fans showing up, perhaps the weather kept a few at home and half the Parade was closed off tonight for a Fashion Parade...
