The old CDFA - rebadged in its dying days as the Northern Metropolitan Football League - wound up around the same time as SAFA.

Pretty sure most, if not all, those clubs joined the Amateurs as well...

Must hold the 'emergency' record.

Seemed like every week Nunan named him as an emergency.

IIRC, he played in one of North's losing grand final sides - '85 or '86?

I played for Hectorville/Norwood Districts in the first year they switched to Amateur, 1990. Walkerville joined at the same time and we were both put in Div6. I think Athelstone, Payneham and a few others stayed in. They may have joined Amateurs in about 95? I remember there was a bit of angst amongst the clubs that joined before SAFA folded because when SAFA did fold, the clubs that came across from Amateurs were exempt from the "enter via Div 6" rule and jumped straight into one of the higher divs.

From the Pooraka site:

When SAFA folded in 1996, the club joined the SAAFL ............

Yep, Ray Hayes played SAFA. He was playing coach of Ingle Farm. Don't know if he played prior to, or after that.

The angry Ant - Tony Antrobus started with Ingle Farm.

Was at Uni back then - Sundays would consist of a recovery beers watching the VFL followed by SAFA at someones house. Beat studying!

Were a lot of the televised games played at Adelaide Oval, or did they also use the suburban grounds such as Pooraka, Ingle Farm etc as well?

I think so. I don't recall any matches from suburban grounds.

I was only quite young, but i recall watching a game or 2 on tv in the early 80's, and my recollection was that the oval wasn't Adelaide Oval. But I really can't be certain.

My very vague memory includes Pooraka and Ingle Farm, whether or not they were the clubs competing, or perhaps a game or 2 were at those ovals.

Burly former Woodville full forward from the late 60's and early 70's who was good value at Flinders Park. Flinders Park also had their own "galloping gasometer" - Gary Richardson.

I reckon Warren Packer played for Athelstone on the way through. Possibly Pettingill too.

On the topic of commentators, I believe the incomparable Ron Kitchen was also behind the microphone.

Packer did play for Athelstone, as did his mate Poulter. I don't recall Pettingill at the Raggies, I know he played at Ferryden Park. I saw him one day at Payneham Oval, even with a bung knee he was still kicking the ball 70-80 metres.
