I dont think that would matter to much, as a team like Centrals with 18 players that work well as a team and have for years, would give a thrown together team of afl fringe players from diffrent clubs a good run.

for example how many times have we seen afl players come back to the SANFL for a week or 2, and struggle.

The proposition wasn't fringe players Sam; the game plan and top 21 (or 22) players of any AFL side would smash the first side of any SANFL side - as good as we have seen the dogs play in recent times, the AFL has grown into a monster as far as skill development and fitness and whilst the SANFL have tried to keep up, it really is only a token gesture by semi professional athletes in comparison.

Simon Arnott was one of the best players I have seen at Centrals, from the way he prepared himself for a game to the way he played and he wasn't good enough to hold a spot on an AFL list for too long.

My thoughts are that any sanfl club taking on a afl club would be flogged. Afl clubs are fully professional, far fitter, faster, stronger and have much more size particularly in key positions. In a fair dinkum contest it wouldnt be close.

Anyone remeber the shocking Sydney Swans team of 1993 (Barrassi's first year got beaten by almost 30 goals by Brisbane in Mrs Footballs first game in charge) that came to Adelaide for a pre-season game in 1994 against the reigning SANFL premiers the Eagles? IIRC Swans won by 15 goals....

Given the increased rate of professionalism in the AFL compared to the rate of increase in professionalsim in the SANFL I think that 1994 game gives a fair indication of what the result would be between Carlton and Centrals or even the Eagles in 2007....

Centrals may have looked good but compare the opposition they and Carlton are playing against. Reckon Carlton would look reasonable playing some of Souths sides. Anyone who honestly believes Centrals could beat any AFL side is dillusional and simply has no idea.

End of thread.........

Exactly. 30 years ago Top SANFL Clubs vs Bottom VFL Clubs would've been completely different. The gulf between the AFL and SANFL is massive these days. Wouldn't come close, 10 goals is conservative.

Soujourner, whatever credits you may have built up over your 70 odd posts have just beer anulled with your ludicrous suggestion. Its actually that far from reality Im starting to think that it was all just a big wind-up. Sorry but you have to go back to scratch and start again!

this is just as silly suggestion that the advertiser came up with could the redbacks beat the poms at cricket. Both would be a one sided game, carlton by at least ten goals.

We'd pump them.

I'd just ask Bingle to come to the game. Get a raging nightclub in the car park near the clubrooms, and enough eckys (we all know AFL players like party drugs - saw one very high profile player at BDO looking like he was on them - or was that just his natural arrogance on display....) etc to distract the Carlton players, who'd only be there for a party anyway and we'd be a chance. The Doggies boys would ignore all that - cause they're in a win/win situ and we'd pump those blue balled mothers....

Ummmm sorry Sojourner - thanks for the compliment of the talent my dogs have displayed in the past eight years or so, but we'd get done like last night's dinner.

My reasonings....

1. They're professionals. Look at the IR games where the rules are changed to suit the Irish semi-professionals (like SANFL clubs) - and they still struggle to get close.
2. Despite the fact you picked Elizabeth Oval, as the ground's so huge, all AFL teams (particularly those from Melbourne) play on the MCG often enough they'd be used to the size. Plus their preparations include tactics on oval sizes. And.....Footy Park's about same size as Elizabeth where they also play often enough.
3. The hard ball gets wouldn't have as much of an impact, as Carlton wouldn't need to get as many HBs. Their opponents generally wouldn't be close enough - due to fitness and speed.

In April, you'd get absolutely pumped. But late August, that's your time. When Carlton's cruelled by injuries from bashing into the big AFL bodies all year, dispirited, rumours abound of Pagan's sacking (again) and they've become a rabble, only looking forward to Mad Monday and a high draft pick for 2008; whereas you're playing as a unit, gearing up for the finals and your players are on top of their game. Plus they'd play in front of a hostile crowd at an unfamiliar ground. With all of those things in your favour, you might get within 5 goals!

This thread confirms the records of SANFL teams against the VFL teams who would go on to become AFL teams (and, more rarely, against AFL teams) over the last 25 years or so. The last SANFL team to beat a VFL team was North Adelaide, who beat 2 of them in 1986 (Melbourne, who finished 2nd-last that year; and Collingwood, who finished 6th/12) before getting pumped by 15 goals by the eventual VFL premiers Hawthorn. Since then, in the increasingly rarely-played games, it's been a litany of failures, with a very honourable mention going to Port Adelaide who just went down to Collingwood by 3 points in 1993. When the hapless AFL cellar-dweller Sydney beat the reigning SANFL champs WWT by 53 points in 1994, it was time to give up. And since then, vastly increased cash and resources in the AFL, and the introduction of lists composed pretty much entirely of full-time professional players, have only made the gap wider. That is to say, even if the standard of the SANFL has improved since the mid-90s (which it may well have), the standard of the AFL has increased much more. Not a comment on how appealing the 2 leagues are to watch, of course...

All of that said, the annual Crows v Norwood games are good, just to give fans a chance to see both clubs playing a (non-intra club) match and to give the players a tune-up (esp the Norwood players). They're not serious contests in the sense that there is any doubt about which side will win.

I witnessed the Port Power v Sturt contest in 2003 when the Power held on in a tight finish to win by 198 pts. Speaking to some Sturt players afterwards, they said that speed & strength are the BIG differences between the respective teams and players. When a SANFL player gets the ball, by the time he has thought about a method of disposal, he has already been tackled and put under huge pressure. When a SANFL player decides to tackle an AFL player, the AFL player has already got rid off the ball !! Centrals would have beaten the WAFL & VFL premiers during the best era, but we'll never know as the state leagues can't seem to be able to organise a pre season cup that would generate a huge amount of interest for footy fans.
