Draught Horse and Co- Why does the coach have to be a Duck Davies, Gary Kernahan or Ray Hayes from the SGL ? Cant be too SGL-centric.
Why not someone with some cross zone experience such as Russell Sawford, Jason Duffy, Don DePalma, Damian Mellow or Woody Turner?( Keith Nutt probably ticked these boxes I guess but his SGL days were decades prior.)Just a thought.
Also, I dont think the coach has to be out of club coaching at present as long as they have things in place to get around to watch/ meet with other comps.A good support crew would be essential. There is a huge upside to the Northern team -Lets face it, it has underachieved since the get go.

There are numerous coaches who could do the role from any of the 3 leagues. But I don't think the Coach is the problem.
The commitment to representative football needs to change, otherwise we'll play the 1st game on Sunday 9 times out of 10.

Don't get me wrong gents, I just wanted to know what Ducks actual credentials were as all I know of him as is a sollies coach then lions. No other info at all other than he's a good egg, has he won a premiership etc?

On the other topic I think the choice of rep coach is very important actually, it will more often than not depict who puts there hand up.

Fair bit of travel involved among the leagues involved in the cities squad so after coaching all week I'd hate to be the one driving all over the country side to get a look at particular players and any decent coach will want to see his squad first hand prior to handing out letters for training like pies at the canteen.

Fair enough it's honour enough to play for the rep side but in many cases some of the names that are shoes in and travel from the city (paid players or otherwise) look at the rep weekend as an opportunity to have a break (regardless of byes). With thats said (and don't go nuts - its a forum which requires suggestions) maybe the league could provide some sought of incentive to clubs/players to represent northern cities, money or otherwise.

Duck hasn't coached a premiership.

I would hope that the next coach would help attract some players, but the zone has had high profile coaches in the past and it didn't matter. Boston, Hynes/McSporran, Ken Burford & Duck have been the last 4 (might have been 1 in between Boston & Hynes)

The payment/injury/rest thing is the exact same reason why we don't have State of Origin.

I get back to the fact that Northern Zone needs players willing to commit. If we couldn't put together a squad of 25 blokes including a bunch of gun u21's between SGL, Whyalla and Northern Areas who could take it up to the rest of the country footballers in this state then we are not trying. We are covering peoples arses.

Not an AFL trend - Im fairly sure this has happened plenty of times in the past in country football. While i have no idea whether your rumour is true I do think its a good idea in the right circumstances. 1. The club culture and coaching direction is going well with the 1st coach before passing onto the "apprentance" and 2. If you have the right man to continue things along.

I agree, common sense to have a "succession plan" in country footy. Good luck with your choice if true though Bloods!! Going on what I seen at West training you wont get a word in and can be one of those "know all" types! Time might tell if he actually does! I heard McKnife wants to do it too!

Very likely to be true Muggatron but a bit harsh there BT!!

Heard a few rumors that Matt Woolford has signed for Centrals.

Would be great for the league as I also heard that Seiber & the his mate from Lions are heading possibly back to Tanunda and Madigan Medallist Tyrone Price is going West. Very big losses for both Lions & Sollies as well as the SGL competition if true.

Just spoke to some of Woolford's team mates at Southern Flinders and they reckon Matty is a Tiger for 2011.

I thought that would be the case, with him training with Centrals you can see why the rumors.

Will be interested in seeing the results.
Souths had an opportunity to play Tanunda, but we have Basketball Grand Finals.

This has also confirmed for me that Port's are unavailable for a pre-season carnival that we are hosting in Quorn.
Looks like it is South Augusta, Lions & Orroroo on the 9th April.
