Your wedding....

Not religious so will never get married, don't see the logic of it.
Next one I'm invited to coincides with Round 1 of the SANFL. Yet another reason to hate the bloody things!
Is it poor form to miss the ceremony and rock up to the reception only?

PS As an aside I've been with my partner for 21 years non stop.

I too have a wedding on that day, and will be doing the "miss the ceremony but attend the reception" thingy....

I'm already pushing it as I missed their engagement party because I was at a Geelong finals match. The other half is getting very threatening too as she knows what I'm thinking! :?

Agreed - I've declined wedding invitations to go to football matches, and the only time I've been to a wedding while a football match was on I was glued to my phone for the whole ceremony!

I'm getting married in mid to late October to avoid this happening.
I play footy and cricket so, missing a cricket match at the start of the season if need be doesn't seem to be a problem with most.

The Bride 'meee' - lol - arrived a few minutes early - the Groom and groomsmen where in a small room off the garden watching the VFL grandfinal - and had to scramble to their positions before I walked 'down the isle'

I, too, am known to arrive early. Not the missus though.

Got married on the last day of summer 2004. Married by a celebrant on the grass at north haven marina then the reception back at my house. Our house had a big pergola overlooking a nice landscaped back yard, so we had tables set up everywhere for people who wanted to sit and i hired some bar tables for the booze area, also had speakers rigged outside for the music . I bought around 25 cartons of beer and some wine and hired a 3 capsule coctail machine, which was a hit. For food we just got cold meats, salad, prawns, oysters etc and desserts. All up for everything cost about $5500, including celebrant, photographer and wedding dress, not for everyone but if you don't want to spend too much money and your house is accommodating enough I'd recommend.

I think a wedding should reflect the type of people you are and not just a put on event because it's expected or to keep others happy. Me and the missus enjoy a party in a relaxed atmosphere and that's exactly what we got, with a reception which included breakfast and a sunday session :D

PS: saying that though If the wife to be wants the whole big thing, than what can you do ? I got lucky

Remind her of the old tradition that the Bride's parents pay for the wedding and reception.
I think the Groom or his family hires the coaches or cars, but I'm not sure now?

Was in the ballroom at The Palais at Semaphore on Feb 6th 1999. Twelve years coming up at the end of the week.

Our wedding song was to be Led Zeppelin "Thankyou", as it turns out the CD got left home and we ended up with Celine Dion and her Titanic number. :(

That was a great night (except for Celine). I used Zeppelin's Thank You at mine ya mongrel LOL. I remember a certain person named after a certain Cartoon Cat speak long and loud into the Porcellian telephone that night ha ha.

I got married at Sunnybrae Farm in 97 with everyone listening into the Bulldogs vs. Crows Prelim Final. It would have been a short marriage had the Cats won that Colbert semi. Still got the vid somewhere but my Missus can't watch it as her Mum passed away a few years ago. We all look so young in it!

I have never submitted myself to a wedding ceremony.

This year I will have been with Mrs Pseudo for 21 years.

Once a mate of mine scheduled his wedding for round 1 of a new SANFL season. I missed the wedding ceremony, but went to the reception after the game.

Heck, I think I've turned into Wedgie

It would pay to plead the case that you can't help being so romantic in nature, and so in love with her, that you can't do anything but hold out for the full romantic tradition.
Then her parents get to be the baddies who prune the expenses.. ;)

Of course, I wouldn't marry a woman who wanted to waste a lot of money on a showy ceremony anyway.
My second wife and I married in the registry office and held a few drinks back at my office afterwards.
[ But I bought her an almost new Range Rover - demo model - to drive around in only a few months later, which I could contrive to partially tax deduct.]
