If Geelong dont win atleast 5 of their 7 at Skilled they will Strugle to make the finals. Gazza will be a Big loss and if the rumours are True and Jimmy Bartel is going to GWS next year they could find them self in the Bottom 4 in 24 months.

Going to be a bloody good side this GWS team. Bartell, Swan, Pendlebury, Thomas, Scully.....

Cats to win all seven at skilled and shit it in for the eight. Remember we don't get to play the good sides down there.

Will finish 5-8

Finished 3rd last year, alot of key players another year older + a big name departure so I cant see them improving at all. Should still make the 8 reasonably comfortably unless they have a horror run with injuries.

Ablett wont be as big as loss as what many are trying to say

if the cats cant finish top 6 then there is problems

there arent many teams below them that will improve significantly and given that, collingwood should win it again this year

George Horlin-Smith (south aussie who captain AUS U/16 cricket side) looks the goods IMO. He is very calm and given he has not played that much football due to his cricket committments, he has enormous upside. Good pick up i feel

I would still expect the cats to finish top 4. There are not really any challengers that have lists still as good as theres even if it is ablettless and ageing.

I put $5 on Stevie J to win the Brownlow at $65.
Don't expect him to win but thought the odds were good if he spends a bit of time in he midfield

The Blues appeared to have the game under control, leading by 25 points midway through the final term before the Cats stormed home to kick the last six goals, sans Jimmy Bartel who sat out the second half with concussion.

Steve Johnson, who had been one of the Cats’ best all day, produced some magic to boot three goals in the final term. Young forward Mitch Brown contributed two in the last quarter.

After leading by 14 points at the final change, the Blues managed only 1.7 in the final quarter, including some easy set shots in front of goal.

Joel Selwood was Geelong’s best player, winning many hard balls and putting his side to advantage with 34 possessions. Evergreen defender Darren Milburn collected 26 disposals and Johnson 25.

Geelong assistant coach Brenton Sanderson conceded the Cats had been outplayed for most of the game, but was happy with the commitment shown at the end.

"It's a bit of a tick to get that pre-season out of the way and look forward to round one," Sanderson said.

"It was good for us to really guts it out, (but) we probably didn’t play a four-quarter performance as we'd like.

"We probably played a bit patchy today and identified we’ve got a few things to work on still heading into round one."

Sanderson was happy with the performance of several senior players, including Travis Varcoe and Cameron Mooney, who played their first games this pre-season. He said Bartel had received mild concussion in the second quarter but would be fine.

The Cats went into the game without captain Cameron Ling, James Podsiadly, Paul Chapman and Shannon Byrnes, while the Blues had Eddie Betts, David Ellard, Marc Murphy, Bret Thornton and Robert Warnock on the sidelines.

Geelong will miss Ablett, no doubts about that. He's a class player, and nobody can afford to lose their best player. Having said that, there's enough talent at Catland to ensure they have a good year .... all things being equal.

I don't get drawn into predicting where teams will finish because, quite frankly, it bores me. The previous year's flag winner is always favourites and the whole exercise is ho-hum. No team has had GENUINE depth since the Hawks in the 1980s (by depth I mean the ability to cover for injuries to key players), and any team who cops more than their share of injuries will struggle to make the top 8, let alone the Grand Final.

All things being equal, I would certainly think there are at least 10-12 teams worse than the Cats.

I reckon the Cat outfit of 2007 had genuine depth as was shown by our premiership win in the VFL that year. Since then many of those players have gone on to play league football for other clubs. It's a lot harder to do a Hawks as well for two reasons, a reduction of the list size and the introduction of the salary cap (says Captain Obvious).

But anyway Hawk you bah humbug you, can't you let us get just a little excited about the fact that footy will be back in a couple of weeks. Pre-season ladder predictions are lot more fun than reading about the exploits of some lying girl, a dodgy player agent and a drunken gambler who has pissed off to the US surely?

I will allow you to be the best judge of Geelong 2007, certainly a great performance, but was that depth ever tested? My memory was Geelong's better players remained sound and on the park. Agreed about the reasons for lack of depth, that was my point, that the Hawks were able to assemble that list in the absence of salary caps and drafts. And when Dermie was either injured or suspended it was no big thing. These days it would be a tragedy.

Excited about the footy? Not really, I'm currently sitting back in my Berjaya Times Square hotel room in KL enjoying a beer and a pizza. Then it's on to Phuket in a coule of days' time, footy isn't exactly on mind, just enjoying the chatter on safooty.

I have to say, it's nice to read a paper with absolutely nothing in it about AFL football. I am astounded by the interest and coverage in Malaysia about the World Cup cricket ... even the Malaysians are sticking it to the Poms :)
