The Smithfield domino effect...

Postby Footy Chick » Sun Feb 20, 2011 4:19 pm

All talk on the effect on other grades should Smithfield officially pull the pin should now be posted here... I've started this thread as I'm sick of seeing talk on it on 3 different threads.

FYI:

Lightning McQueen wrote:OK, here's the scoop, it's not official yet I don't think but Smithfield is highly unlikely to be in div 5. It is disappointing to see what length's some clubs go to in their attempts to lure players, especially from a sinking ship. We've had some of the following scenario's:
Players being told by other clubs it's all good to go there because they have been officially told that we are folding.
Clubs gettind sh!tty with players not making a decision yet to see if Smithfield are going to be around.
Former players giving numbers to clubs of other players to try luring them out there.

Obviously the days have gone for playing for your local and where you grew up, the SAAFL and other leagues has become somewhat of a "big business", money talks and bidding wars have been rife.

In saying that, I'd like to say well done to Carey Payne who has had Smithfield's existence in his best interests before having a crack at any of our players, he has liaised with me to get updates on how we are travelling and not in a selfish way.

It's been a blast on here over the past few season's, I've got to meet some wonderful club people and gained a lot of insight into how other clubs operate.

I guess I wont be on this thread much longer and I wish all other clubs the best of luck for this season and beyond.

Always good chatting to the likes of zedman, Executive Member, Dark Knight, Ash Man, S Demon, Jabber, Mr Beefy, Demon Juke, sprinter and the list goes on, it takes many different kinds to make up a club and an association and I've been wrapt that I've had the experience through this site over the years.

I apologise for anyone that I haven't mentioned, there's been too many.

Regards
LM

Someone from North Haven has contacted the league and their official line is that Smithfield will be fielding a team in Div 5 this year so everything is hypothetical at this stage.

If anyone can confirm differently let me know as this situation will obviously directly affect North Haven
I have a problem. It's to do with the little man, the squashed-in French man, the naked little squashed up hairy boy! You know! With the hand feet

If North Haven are offered a spot back in Div 5, they should take it. NO QUESTION!

Just ask Lockleys, CLG, West Croydon, Hope Valley, Westminster, how hard it is/was to get back out of Div 6. It might set you back another 5 years. If you get the chance to get back in, take it, then fight to stay in Div 5. Who knows what can happen?

I guess there is always an exception to the rule, I don't think Golden Grove were there for too long either.

My point is that unless you've had a mass exodus and are looking a bit shaky, if you are offered a lifeline to stay in the division you were relegated from, you should take that opportunity.

Exactly like BOS will if they're offered the chance...

Guess you have to ask yourself how much harm would it do to stay up Vs how much you have to gain by going down.

North Haven are waiting on confirmation from the league until then there is no decision to make. If it does come to that I think the committee will make a decision based on whats the best long term outcome for the club.

Like myself and DK have stated earlier we are probably not in a position to improve too much on last years effort but on a personal note I would much rather play in Div 5 although I have no say whatsoever in what the club does.

sorry I didny quote that...

Haven haven't won a flag for many a year.

if they take the life line I can't see much good come of it
i. They may play well and remain in D5 in 2012 (coz they won't win the D5 flag) and if they do that.... so what - no real success!!!!
ii. they may get re-demoted which would kill their club and motivational levels
iii. They may know how important it is to get back to D5 after knocking the lifeline back, so have a real drive to succeed on the own merits and play D5 in 2012 anyway.

Only heard same as you guys.
All i knew beforehand was that they were going to hire a trainer from Salisbury North who happens to be my daughters OSHC supervisor, she realised she wouldnt be required when only 5 or so rocked up to training just before Joss quit, so she went back to Salisbury North with Joss.

Might be hard to see but i think Smithfield should enter the 2 sides in Div 5. Im a big believer in 'If you build it they will come'
They will have a very motley B grade and wont win a game but im sure they can find enough old blokes come outta retirement and young lads will rock up for a game that maybe stayed away in last couple years coz they didnt make the B grade cut.

No matter what A grade side Smithfield put out they will be competitive. Thats just the way they are.

I appreciate your support and best wishes, the problem you face when you are lacking numbers is that players know they will get a game and it makes it harder for the club to get rego out of them, seen this last season in a big way.
You don't put teams on the park for the sake of it, it needs to financially viable, yes the A grade would've been very competetive but you don't know who'll you'll get rocking up for the B's......if any.
As far as getting some old heads out there, one or two games in and they get injured and you're back to square one.
