I've always felt that taking an extra run like that gives the fielding side the right to appeal for handled ball if the batsman picks it up.

Never thought it was appropriate to take the runs like that. Never picked the ball up to give it to a fielder either mind you. Lol.

i do this all the time. I just make sure I check with the bowler first

I hate seeing it. No need for it... Just bat and let the fielders field.

I made the mistake once when I was 16 (Churches comp)...was on about 180 and gave the ball to the keeper. About 3 or 4 bozos appealed and the umpire asked the skipper if he wanted him to give me out. He reluctantly said no as I was close to 200 and he let me bat on... Have not picked the ball up since.

its plain and simple, cricket ettiquet (spelling not good ) if the fielder throws the ball and it hits you whether intentional or not you dont run, same if you are batting and the ball lodges in your pads you put it on the ground and let the fielder get it.
it is not arrogance it is called cricket, you learn that in juniors . that way it takes out all the fighting when given out handling ball, which has happened once to me before   IMO.

So if you was having serious words with a fielder and you felt he intentionaly threw the ball at you while running, you wouldnt run? Stuff ettiquet( hope you spelt it right) i would be off for sure, and at the same time giving him a mouthful..
Def wouldnt run under any other circumstances...

If the ball is caught in the batsman's clothing then the ball is dead - can't be given out.
