Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has this morning confirmed that Steven Gerrard will miss the rest of the season.

The Reds captain underwent groin surgery last month, but suffered a setback in training last week and subsequently missed Saturday’s clash with West Brom.

Dalglish revealed the news during his pre-match press conference at Melwood on Friday.

"We still don't know definitively what the problem is, so we will wait until we get a precise answer from the people he has been to see.

"But he will not be involved again this season, so that's Steven as well for this season.

"It's a blow to have anybody out, but it's more disappointing for the players than it is for us. We just have to get on with it."

The news regarding Gerrard's fitness comes just days after Daniel Agger was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a knee injury, and Glen Johnson is also facing a stint on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring problem.

"Without being disrespectful to the players who are injured, the most important ones are the ones who are fit because they're the ones who can be chosen.

"At this particular moment in time, I'm as good a player as Steven!" Dalglish concluded.

Liverpool v Man City
Home Team Score Away Team Time
Liverpool v Man City 20:00

Barclays Premier League
Venue: Anfield Date: Monday, 11 April Kick-off: 2000 BST

Liverpool are without injured defenders Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson, while captain Steven Gerrard has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Fabio Aurelio and Jonjo Shelvey are back in training but lack fitness, while David Ngog returned from injury in a reserve match on Monday.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini reported no new injury concerns following the win against Sunderland.
City are again without injured duo Jerome Boateng and Micah Richards.

Liverpool:
Doubtful: Aurelio & Shelvey (both fitness)
Injured: Agger (knee), Gerrard (groin), Johnson & Kelly (both hamstring)
Man City
Injured/unavailable: Boateng (knee), Given (shoulder), Richards (hamstring), K Toure (suspended)

MATCH PREVIEW

Anything other than a Liverpool victory will end their faint hopes of snatching a Champions League spot, and dent their chances of qualifying for the Europa League.

The Reds may have won six of their last nine league games, but injuries are beginning to expose the lack of depth in the squad Kenny Dalglish inherited. The Merseysiders ended the 2-1 defeat at West Brom with four centre-backs in defence, a ploy they may have to repeat on Monday.
City fans may have one eye on Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against neighbours Manchester United, but manager Roberto Mancini has made it abundantly clear that a top-four finish is his priority this season.
On the evidence of the 5-0 win against Sunderland last time out, that should not be a problem for City, who played with the kind of verve and swagger rarely seen under Mancini.
The challenge for the Italian is to reproduce that form away from Eastlands; City have yet to win on the road in 2011 in either league or cup.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
• Manchester City are unbeaten in their last four games against Liverpool, although three of those ended in draws.
• City have failed to win on their last seven trips to Anfield (D2, L5). Their most recent victory at Liverpool was on 3 May 2003, when Nicolas Anelka converted two penalties in a 2-1 win.
Liverpool
• According to Opta, Maxi Rodriguez has created 31 scoring opportunities for team-mates this term, without any of them being netted - the highest such figure in the top flight.
• The Reds have won two of their last five league games, keeping one clean sheet.
• Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six league matches at Anfield.
Manchester City
• Roberto Mancini's men have failed to win an away league game in 2011, taking two points from a possible 15.
• City have won nine penalties this season, more than any other Premier League side.
• They had the same number of points at this stage last season, but sat two places lower in the table (fifth instead of third).
• City have kept 14 Premier League clean sheets this term, more than any other top-flight side.

Barclays Premier League
Venue: Emirates Stadium Date: Sunday, 17 April Kick-off: 1600 BST

TEAM NEWS
Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny is back in full training after recovering from a dislocated finger and could return in goal against Liverpool.

The Gunners could be further boosted by the return of defenders Johan Djourou (shoulder) and Bacary Sagna (knee).

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish reported no new injury concerns following Monday's defeat of Manchester City.

Young defender John Flanagan won praise for an assured debut against City and is expected to continue at right back.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arsenal

Doubtful: Almunia, Sagna & Song (all knee), Denilson (toe), Djourou (shoulder), Szczesny (finger)

Injured: Bartley (knee), Fabianski (shoulder), Mannone (thigh), Vermaelen (Achilles)

Liverpool

Injured: Agger (knee), Gerrard (groin), Johnson & Kelly (both hamstring)

MATCH PREVIEW
A season of frustration could yet end in celebration for both these sides, who meet at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday desperate for the three points that would keep their seasons alive.
Victory for Arsenal would see Manchester United's lead at the top of the table cut to just four points, and with Sir Alex Ferguson's side chasing trophies on three fronts and still to travel to North London, Arsene Wenger maintains all is not lost in the Gunners' quest for a first league title since 2004.

Liverpool's pursuit of European football is gathering momentum, with Monday's 3-0 victory over Manchester City confirming the Reds' renaissance under Kenny Dalglish. Record signing Andy Carroll opened his Anfield account with a spectacular strike and a trademark header against City, and the former Newcastle striker will relish his return to the Emirates where he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for the Magpies in November.

The game will be Arsenal's first since American Stan Kroenke secured a controlling stake in the club, vowing to bring the good times back to North London. Three points on Sunday would be a good way to start.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

• The two sides met at Anfield on the opening day of the season. The game finished 1-1, with David Ngog putting Liverpool ahead before Pepe Reina's mistake gifted the Gunners a point.

• It's 11 years since Liverpool last won at Arsenal, a 1-0 victory in February 2000. The Merseyside club have never won at the Emirates.

• Liverpool have won only three of their last 19 Premier League games against Arsene Wenger's men, and none of the last seven.

• There have been more hat-tricks scored in this fixture than any other in Premier League history (five).

Arsenal

• Arsenal are on a 14-match unbeaten run in the league, although this includes six draws. They are the only Premier League team who are unbeaten in 2011.

• Despite the Gunners' perceived goalkeeping problems they have conceded against only four of their last 12 league opponents.

• Robin van Persie is poised to make his 150th Premier League appearance for the Gunners, while Andrey Arshavin is on the brink of his 100th appearance for the club.

Van Persie has scored 20 goals in his last 21 Premier League starts.

Liverpool

• According to Opta Stats, Lucas Leiva has made 139 tackles this season, more than any other player (correct before Saturday's action).

• Liverpool have won just one and lost five of their last six Premier League games in London.

• They have now scored in 14 successive Premier League matches, the best current run in the league.

• If selected, Milan Jovanovic will be playing on the eve of his 30th birthday.

LEADING GOALSCORERS

Van Persie: 16 goals (12 league); Nasri: 14 goals (9 league)

Following on from a discussion with Bully in the EPL thread, The point's Liverpool have earnt against each opponent thus far:

Arsenal 2/6
Man City 3/6
West Brom 3/6
Birmingham 1/3
Man United 3/6
Sunderland 4/6
Blackpool 0/6
Everton 1/6
Blackburn 3/6
Bolton 6/6
Chelsea 6/6
Wigan 2/6
Stoke 3/6
West Ham 3/6
Tottenham 0/3
Aston Villa 3/3
Newcastle 0/3
Wolves 3/6
Fulham 3/3

So, better than expected results against Chelsea and even Bolton who can often be a bit of a Banana skin, but whilst you can't expect to avoid losing to all of the lower ranked teams over the course of a season, losses to Blackpool x 2, West Brom, Blackburn, Stoke, West Ham and Newcastle is too many .. Not to mention 2 x draws with Wigan.

Reckon Liverpool are playing much more flamboyant, attacking and overall positive football under Kenny with good spirit and reckon he might just hold onto the Managerial spot

Only Blackpool have done the double over you so far.

Personally Liverpool have done ok this season considering the mess they have been in for the last couple of years.

A lesser club would have collapsed totally

Manchester United’s last-ditch hopes of signing Jordan Henderson look to have faltered with the Sunderland midfielder intent on joining Liverpool.
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is eager to bring in United’s Darron Gibson, Danny Welbeck and Wes Brown but will now have to offer cash.
England Under 21 star Henderson wants his Liverpool move wrapped up by Wednesday and the Anfield club have made an improved £18million bid.

Ipswich’s Connor Wickham could also be on his way to Liverpool once they increase their offer to £10m.

Liverpool FC are in talks with Roma to sign Brazilian goalkeeper Alexander Doni, according to the player's agent.

Doni, who is under contract with the Serie A club for a further season, has been strongly linked with a move away from the Eternal City this summer.

Doni´s agent Ovidio Colucci said: "I spoke to the club (Roma) yesterday and they confirmed they are holding talks with Liverpool to reach an agreement regarding the transfer of Doni.

"Once an agreement is reached betwen the two clubs, we will begin negotiating personal terms with Liverpool.

"Doni would be very happy to join Liverpool and play in the Premier League."

The 31-year-old joined Roma in 2005 from Brazilian side Juventude.

The South American has been an understudy to Julio Sergio in recent seasons, and made 16 league appearances for Roma this term
