Sirens and Clocks at SANFL grounds

Postby Squawk » Wed Feb 28, 2007 12:01 am

With trial games over the next few weeks I'll be interested to hear any feedback on sirens at grounds this year.

I know I have had trouble hearing the siren at the Parade in the past. However, with the debacle in Tassie last year between Freo and St Kilda I would hope that the SANFL is checking all sirens before the start of the minor round to make sure they are up to scratch.

I also think clubs should check their clocks - each year some grounds dont seem to have functional clocks for the benefit of spectators.

North's clock was fine when it was the old analogue one, but the digital clock is shite unless you are directly across the oval from it.

I thought that the South siren was a bit sick and the one at Elizabeth can be mistaken as a train.

the cow bell prior to sturt return to unley vs south in 98 was hilarious...it was ringing for ages before they heard it...you have members of the crowd yelling out and players telling the umps.....

but since then, the siren and clock at unley are fine ;)

All ovals should be located next to railway lines.

Like Salisbury Oval.

Only problem is when the 2.22 to town rockets past midway through the first quarter.

And play stops when the train driver blares the horn...

Generally, the sirens and clocks in the SANFL are quite reasonable.

Unley and Norwood's sirens are barely audible, while the clocks at Glenelg and Alberton are barely readable. IMO, the SANFL should make all grounds convert to digital clocks (while I admit the digital clock at Broadspectrum's attoricious, the rest are excellent).

Only a handful of games there, but Thebarton Oval could do with some improvement...
Even if it's only on a temporary basis!

I loved the time clock at Unley the day that they had to get a redcoat to put a number up on the scoreboard every two minutes. Nothing like technology, eh? Yep, absolutely nothing like technology!

Got to love technology, North's time clock in the outer stopped working since it went digital whenever radio broadcasts were made from Prospect at one stage!
Like a few others on here I much prefer the old style clocks with the yellow part for time one, easy to read from any part of the ground.

Prospect's digital clock is also shit unless it's overcast, the old clocks were easy to read, and have a bit of charachter as well.
If grounds are to have digital clocks, then they need to install 4, one on each wing, and one at each end, so that everyone in the ground can read it.

I love the old style time clock at Glenelg stratgeically positioned behind the light pole when you look at it from the radio commentary booth.

Then there is the Thebarton mobile scoreboard which puts "Welcome To City Of West Torrens" when you want to read out the score.

Or the siren at Norwood placed into a microphone which goes into three other speakers nearby (Take note Launceston). Great way to clear out the sinuses.
