SA Indigenous Dream Team 1858 - 2011

Post by damian »

SA Indigenous Dream Team

For a player to be eligible they must have either;
Be born in South Australia
Played five or more years for an SANFL Club
Played five or more years for an SA based AFL Club
Played five or more years for an SA Community Football Club
Played a combined five or more years with an SANFL Club, SA based AFL Club and an SA Community Football Club.

I would suggest automatic inclusion for the following players as members of the Australian Indigenous Team of the Century;
Andrew McLeod (Adelaide FC)
Adam Goodes (SA Born - Sydney)
David Kantilla (South Adelaide FC)
Gavin Wanganeen (Port Adelaide FC)
Michael O'Loughin (SA Born - Central District/Sydney)
Peter Burgoyne (Port Adelaide FC)
Michael Graham (Sturt)
Byron Pickett (Port Adelaide FC)

Others players to consider may include;
Graham Johncock
Shaun Burgoyne
Daniel Motlop
Shannon Motlop
Troy Bond
Shane Bond

I'd then be interested to hear peoples thoughts on ou Country footballers, Aboriginal players that have won Mail Medals, Premierships etc.

See how you go!

two that i have witnessed..gary and ian croft for west whyalla in the 70's both played in several premierships in a row.great reflexes.if gary dropped a snag at a barby, ian would catch it an inch from the ground! i would swap pickett for johncock.

We'll throw them in for consideration and have a look into the brothers.

What about Gilbert McAdam, Eddie Hocking or even Elijah Ware (3 time premiership player), Eddie Sansbury (cue dutchy) 3 time SANFL premiership player, 2 time VFL premiership player.

McAdam is the only realistic candidate of those, but being from NT may exclude him. Ware is a long way off.

I would also nominate Roger Rigney and Ross Agius.

Did David Kantilla play for five seasons at South?

Seeing as he was born on the Tiwi islanders, may not be eligible based on those criteria??
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

"For a player to be eligible they must have either.......
"Played a combined five or more years with an SANFL Club, SA based AFL Club and an SA Community Football Club."

Gilby McAdam probably wouldn't have played the required five years.
However, he was the first Aboriginal to win the Magarey.
Still the only one?

On this fact alone, I think it would be an oversight not to pick him.

He fits the criteria having played from 1961 until the end of 1966 (6 seasons). He won the Best & fairest in his first two years, played in the 1964 Premiership and is recognised as the first Indigenous player to play in the SANFL. He played in four State matches for SA in 1964 & 65.

Gilbert played for North Adelaide from 1983-85 (U17-Reserves) then played League footy for Central District in 1988 (Runner-up to Greg Anderson in the Magarey) and 1989 (won the Magarey Medal). After years i the AFL system, Gilbert finished with his sixth season in the SANFL in 1998 with the Dogs.

Ha, beat me to it Damian, I was just going to also add, "would qualify for the five years, and as a champion, brilliant to watch".

I questioned the five years, as I wasn't sure if you were including lower grades or just time spent playing league.
Ta for the info.

Glad he qualifies.

Wilbur Wilson?

Were Michael Long or Derek Kickett here for long enough?

There was another Graham who played for Centrals in the 80's, left footer, that I always thought went alright, Colin maybe?
