South Australian cricket coach Wayne Phillips has quit after a disappointing year with the Redbacks.

South Australian Cricket Association chief executive Mike Deare said the decision was in the best interests of the state and a recruitment process to fill the coaching position had already begun.

South Australia finished bottom of both the four-day and one-day domestic cricket competitions this season.




Perhaps jumped before he was pushed. I think there needed to be a change. Almost confirmed by the fact that the recruitment process had already begun.

The writing was on the wall for Flipper. He would've known (if he hadn't already been told) that he wouldn't be around next year. Reckon it is definitely a case of jumping before being pushed.

Lets hope the best possible replacement is found. I've heard Justin Langer's name mentioned. Thoughts?

I concur, this seems to be a case of Phillips jumping before being pushed.

I think Langer will still play on @ WA next year, but he would be a great coach, no doubt.

Any chance of Lehmann being a playing coach, and relinquishing the captaincy to someone else?

need someone from outside- i believe lehman is not the best option. he always says how he's enjoying bringing on the youngsters (said it again on 5aa on wed)- which youngsters has he "brought on"??.......langer no chance surely- he's at somerset all this winter.

One of these days the SACA will put in place a workable system to help the coach rather than hinder him, and then maybe we wouldn't have to replace the coach as often as we do.

Flipper knew about 3 weeks ago he was being retrenched.
Flipper from the gos I got, did not want ELLIOTT and BLEWETT last season[one or both offered to TAS.]
Flipper was not entirely the main man calling the shots, not a *jolly* fellow.

I feel sorry for flipper, as coach he must accept the failures, but those in the
know tell me he is the scapegoat.

From the information i heard if he is offered a position it would likely be as playing coach. He is very keen to get into coaching.

I'm interested you haven't chucked in the on-field decision making of one D. Lehmann that you've criticised regularly over the season. Ultimately the skipper makes the decisions on the field, which can effect the results, and the end result is what made Flipper look so bad.

He may of given his best but when the players stop respecting the coach it is definitely time to move on. Just a pity it is a season too late.

This is a bit of a generalised question, but given our season was as bad (or worse) than any in recent memory, is there still a chance that a "Scapegoat" might shake others into gear sufficiently enough to improve our performance?

I don't know enough about what goes on down there, and certainly not passing judgement on Flipper, more a question of whether the removal of a significant administrator, whether right or wrong, could still prove beneficial to performance in the short or long term future?
