Paid Parking at the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

Paid Parking at the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre

Postby Sojourner » Wed Jun 29, 2011 11:07 pm

How much lower can Mike Rann and his Labor Government sink in this state?

A mate of mine had a stroke and spent several months there, I think its disgusting that if it happened today that everyone including his wife on the disabled pension who went to visit him would be slugged for car parking fees. By far the majority of patients at the Hampstead Centre and their partners are on Disability Pensions, stealing their last $5 to pay for carparking is a very dirty low act IMO, especially when its from the party that claim to represent people on low incomes.

Fortunatley I hear that the Dignity for Disabled Party, of whom Kelly Vincent is the member in the Legislative Council are reconsidering their preference allocation over this and other issues. As much as it pains me to say it, D4D would be well advised to go do a deal with the Greens over the ALP.

Shame Labor Shame..... :Hangman: :Hangman: :Hangman:

If so (and I do remember reading something about this) it's more evidence of the ALP being rotten to the core. Trying to sell off The Parks to their Big Developer mates was the final straw for me. It's not just SA Labor either Federally they're probably even worse. Backflipping on the ETS, the Malaysian Solution, beating up the poor on welfare (disabled pensioners, unemployed, teenage parents) harder than Howard's Liberals ever did etc

Thankfully those of a centre-left persuasion now have the Greens to represent them as I can't see myself voting for the ALP ever again.

Hospital Car Parks...$%^&*$$$$*&^%@#$%^&*()(*

Postby mal » Thu Jun 30, 2011 8:09 pm

There is talk about charging people to park at some SA Hospitals
If this ever eventuates it would be one of the lowest most disgraceful things ever

Its all about choices
We have choices whether we should use any payment car parks
Whether its a
shopping centre
sporting venue car park
city car park building
side street
etc etc
Yep we can decide if we should park there or not

Parking at a hospital is not always about choice
Your either there becoz your sick
Or you might be there to visit the sick
You might be driving the sick there
Having to pay for that privilege in my opinion is as despicable as it gets

I think that people with concession cards or on a pension, or people who are regularly in & out of hospital should be exempt but I don't see a problem with paying if you are just a visitor or can afford it.

Most hospitals have some form of paid parking these days. I got slugged $12 for the trickhouse that is the Womens and Childrens Hospital car park last month. Becoming a necessary evil unfortunately.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

I think if you don't charge a fee then it turns into a general use free carpark and then those that do need to use it can't get a spot because of the all the freeloaders.

So, I agree. It's a necessary evil. Our first was born at Flinders and the second at Ashford. Both charge for parking and it sure adds up when you park all day for a number of days straight!

Who is "Freeloading" to park at Hampstead road next to Sir Ross Smith High School? You are aware that most people that use the Hampstead Centre and there visitors that are their partners are usually on Disability or Carers Pensions? Such is the nature of having a Stroke. Both workers and patients alike are to be slugged the $13 per day. How would you like to have a Stroke, be put on the Pension and be slugged $13 a day for the several months that you are in recovery for your partner to see you? This would be in addition to all the various $$$ that you have already spent on Medicare gaps and medical equipment and so on.....

Still, a number of people associated with the Dignity for Disability Party seem to pretty hotly disagree with the Labor Party on this one and there is quite a lot of talk around that they will no longer be preferencing the ALP and will turn to the Greens instead, continuing to support and build their profile in the State, votes that Labor will struggle to get back. I do think that is a fair outcome.

Soj I wasn't talking specifically about the Hampstead Centre. I thought we were talking about the major hospitals or the concept in general. Modbury hospital is a good example if people use it to then go and catch the bus.

I still think free car parks in some areas can attract non-users of the medical facility but that depends on where the facility is. A car park out of the front of a hospital nonwhere near any public facilities is different to the WCH. In any situation where there is a long term user of the hospital and therefore the car park there could be special exceptions I agree. That or concessions for certain groups of people.

Over the past fortnight I have had a close mate and father in law in two different hostipals. I suggust it has coast me well over $200 in parking fees just to visit them. There is no resonably priced parking around the RAH or Flinders Private that has a decent time limit. I understand the RAH but Flinders Private is crazy...$9 for an hour.

If the Libs think they can get in just on the back of the fact that people are over the ALP state government they may be in for a nasty surprise! Isobel Redman seems pretty slow on the uptake especially on policy towards issues that are current in the community.

Our State Libs need to do what their contemporarys are doing in Qld where they have given the Brisbane Mayor who is not even an elected member the leadership of the party, in our case, approaching someone like Alexander Downer would not be a bad idea!

a partial backdown ...

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/sout ... 6102057440

Patients who attend the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre for fitness and therapy will be exempt from new carparking fees.

The State Government last week caved into mounting opposition against its plan to charge everyone who parks at the centre from August 15.

But the government is holding firm on its decision to charge visitors and staff for parking at the Hampstead.
