Round 21 West v Glenelg Review

Postby Brodlach » Fri Aug 26, 2011 11:09 pm

West 10.14 = 74
Glenelg 13.8 = 86

West : Brad Fisher, Webb 4; Morris, Hartlett

Glenelg : Kirk, Hender,A Grima 3; Trembath, M Snook, Shaw, Kane

Frees

West 20
Glenelg 31

West missed too many shots at goal. Big difference in the free kicks again for such a close game. Dont know what we have to do to get a decent run with the umpires.

Start by being disciplined.....Westies by far are the least disciplined side I've seen this year.

I'd like to find the switch that is hidden down at Glenelg, as they played tonight completely different to last week.

Well done on the kids, they carried the team tonight....

Good win by Glenelg, almost certainties for finals now. Would take a heap of results against them to miss.

Westies fielded, arguably, their best side of the year (ex Nat Caruso) in perfect conditions at Richmond Oval tonight. They came up against a severely weakened Glenelg who were demoralised last week and who fielded young players like Shaw, Hender, Snook, Clayfield,Curran, Neale and Murdoch who, between them had played around 20 games.
This was the chance for Westies to prove that, with the return from injury of key players they were a serious chance of playing finals. Instead they established beyond any doubt that they are just a very ordinary side that simply don’t deserve to play footy in September.
Pettigrew didn’t play but Davenport came into the team from the Power. Birss tagged Kane Cornes (or was it the other war around?) Ferguson took the dangerous Kirkby.
The game started with the Bays kicking their first 4 goals courtesy of dubious umpiring decisions by a trio of incompetents that succeeded in confusing and infuriating supporters from both teams all night. Brad Fisher kicked our 2 gls and Beech missed a run in goal from 15m out right in front and Willets adding 2 behinds from poor kicks. 1Q Gl 4.3, WA 2.4.
The second saw only 3 gls kicked as both teams tried to assert themselves with the game played between the 2 half back lines. Westies poor kicking cost them dearly as they persist in driving the ball deep into the pockets where it is so difficult to score. We kicked 1.5 this Q and this blew our chances. Half time Gl 6.6, WA 3.9.
The 3rd was our best as we banged on 4.1 with Daniel Webb taking several strong marks and getting 2 gls and Steve Morris getting a rare major after a very dicey free out in front. Matthew Rankine limped off with a bad leg injury after contributing to one of our goals. 3Q Gl 8.8, WA 7.10.
Westies had hit the front a few times and so the final Q was set up to be a beauty with both teams competing for a finals berth. Hartlett goaled in the first minute from one of his rare touches and we were in front again. From then on we played very ordinary footy while the Bays did all the right things. They applied pressure through fierce tackling, kicked some inspirational goals forced Westies into repeated error and played with the desire required of the situation. A Ryan Willets blunder, a Scotty Bricknell fumble both let the Bays in for goals as we continued with indirect passages of football resulting in us having shots from the boundary. Final score Gl 13.8, WA 10.14.
We had more scoring shots but were beaten by the better team on the night. It was a tight contest with mistakes from both sides and the game was played with plenty of spirit and more than a little spite. We had finally assembled close to our best outfit but had failed the test and consigned ourselves to another year at the wrong end of the table. There were several chances for us to run away with the game but we just weren’t up to it – and the Bays were!
Brad Fisher and Webb kicked 4 apiece. Webb played his best game for the club tonight as he marked strongly and kicked truly. Willets, Schmidt, Ben and Brad Fisher, Bricknell and Anderson did some good things but like most of the team the good things are too often cancelled out by the fumbles, the poor decisions, the careless tackles, the dropped marks, the poor disposal, etc. Ferguson shaded Kirkby, Cornes beat Birss. We didn’t get enough from Davenport, Caruso, Hartlett, Rankine, Thompson and Ezard.

Woohoo! So long as west got an excuse for losing, I guess that's all that mattered from what that first post of the thread seemed to imply.

I had faith in the kids - and they proved me correct

Matt Snook was just terrific. Lewie Hender is a genuine forward who deserves to hold his place in the league team imo. (geez I love these kids) Hender chases, tackles and does everything he can to keep the ball in our scoring zone, whilst Matt Snook is a tackling machine.
Sam Shaw earned his spot with the right attitude in Reserves, and he does everything right.

In only his 2nd game in 4 months Andrew Bradley is playing great footy too, and will only get better with more match fitness.
Along with Brad Agnew, Chris Curran, Lachie Neale, Shannon Snook and Jordan Murdoch we had some young guys with the right attitude tonight, and it showed that "a week is a long time in football"

Bring on this combination of the right attitude and full blown committment against the Magpies next week, and I will be looking forward to finals football in a fortnight.

Good to see Daniel Webb playing so well tonight and kicking straight - his goal kicking practice on Flagstaff Oval must be paying dividends

Wasnt implying that at all, just pointing it out. Also pointed it out many times in the live score thread and if you read that thread I never complained about the umpires once.

Bad goalkicking was the main reason we lost.

Besides getting called a streaker by Weslo which would be an ugly site. Well done the bays. Nice to see our reserves getting some late seson form with 4 wins on the trot

Well done Bays and good luck in the finals. 3 or 4 easy misses just before half time cost us. Umpiring - the less said the better. Bring on cricket season.
