Played with one of his sons too.

John Marslen was a good player, played with Elizabeth and Walkerville.
Could play cricket too.

It used to actually be televised in the late 70's early 80's on a Sunday such was the standard & profile of the competition. I used to barrack for Edwardstown back in those days, simply due to me being so young and them wearing the double blues.

Dragan Tankosic
Ian Jones
Gary Simpson
Michael Niessen
Phil Robertson
Colin Kirkwood
Darrin Wilson
Rob Kent
Paul Dittmar
Paul Gibbs

Dont no when to stop.

Michael Niessen......wasn't during the televised era. Unless it's a different Niessen I know then, he finished up playing against me when he was at Queanbeyan (NSW/ACT league).

Is that the same Wilson that finished up at Fitzroy (SA Am club) for a couple of seasons?

Most of JamesH information is correct with the exceptions that Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley,Marion and Morphetville Park never played in the SAFA.

The SAFA started in 1978 with the first televised game being between Flinders Park v Athelstone in which Flinders Park winning by about 5 goals. It was a competition that was intended to be run like the VFA.Due to the good ratings on TV many clubs applied to join SAFA between 1978-81.In 1978 there were 16 teams in 2 divisions and it increased to 20 teams by the early 80's.
However once South Melbourne relocated to Sydney and their Sydney games were shown live in opposition to the SAFA and the SAFA ratings plummeted .Channel 9 dropped their coverage and thus this lead to the decline and eventual demise of SAFA as more clubs were leaving than joining because of the expense involved to stay in the competiton.
Ironically the VFA suffered the same fate and also finished in 1995.

I remember Ian Aitken and Gary Window doing the commentary back in those days - obviously the halcian days of local footy.

Thanks for the info DTM, I'm a bit too young to realise how it all started, and why it finished. I just used to enjoy the fact that one week I could watch the game on TV, and the next wander down to the local oval and watch the game, knowing it was on TV. Ahh, those were the days.

mike niessen was quite a negative person at football training in the 90's at the bulls towards the younger guys. maybe he thought he was playing afl back then.this is when he played interstate and trained at pooraka whilst living in sa. good player though.

Does anyone know how I can get a hand on some of the old SAFA "Budgets" as I'd be keen to add the competition to my collection?
