Trever Mac is by far the best umpire the league has ever had. Some of the best games I have ever seen umpired were by Trever Mac but I didn't realise who was umpiring until I read the budget after the game. The best umpires are usually not really noticed.

Mick Taylor lets his ego umpire for him and believes he is the most important part of the game. He could be an excellent umpire if he allowed himself not to be the centre of attention sometimes and let the game go on around him.

I agree Trevor Mac is a great umpire and one of the nicest blokes you will meet.
As for Taylor just think back 5 years or more about the umpiring standard then and like him or not i think he has done a hell of alot for improving the umpires in his time as coach.
Word is Owen is very happy with Mick and he will coach the umpires for the next few years but i have heard that Holmes is being talked to about going back to the SFL as coach?

I have heard the same rumour regarding Holmes.

I completely agree on the standard being lifted and Mick has done a fantastic job in recruiting younger umpires. Personally I don't mind having a beer with the bloke either.

My comment was directly regarding his umpiring.

Believe it or not, I think Johnno is one of the better umpires in the league (I hope this doesn't go to his head!!) as well as young McLean. Both are very consistant which is what you want.
I just hope that Johnno's banter doesn't get to the point that Taylor's is. That is the worse thing about Taylor - he niggles the players with all the crap and taunts that he continues to dish out. Johnno more or less commentates as he umpires which isn't too bad.

Trev Mac I think has dropped off a bit lately as has a lot of the umpires - I think they watch too much AFL and get too tiggy-touch-wood. Perhaps that is Taylor's coaching influence??

But I agree, the best umpires are the ones you don't notice or remember and that's how it should always be.

I would have to fiercely disagree with that. Macclesfield's oval is far Superior. Probably the best in both divisions.
Hold's absolutely no water since the new drainage went in and is completely covered in grass. Absolute disgrace no finals were played there.

GF Tips: -
Echunga By 3 Goals. I believe the week off the the loss in the Semi may be kicked them into gear. If Dave Edmonds and Henke at either end for Echunga have a cracker then it will be a flag for the Ds. As the midfield is pretty even, Its gonna really come down to the forwad lines and who can stand up on the day! The big oval of Kersbrook is very suited to Echungas Running Game. Does anyone know what the weather will be on Saturday?

Yeah I agree with that, although Kersbrook is really good. Not sure why they didn't play a finals game there. Would have been streets better than Gum and even Meadows...

What is it with you guys? There are no best umpires, only a few who we tolerate! But if I had to name my favourite, then it is Butch. Biggest crowd entertainer in the HFL.

As for ovals. I've seen both Macclesfield and Kersbrook and probably for parking and watching Kersbrook is better but the best playing surface in the hills is at Uraidla. Ask anyone who was there on Sunday.

Kersbrook oval is by far the best oval in the hills. But it probably should be for the money that was spent on it a few years ago. Not once has there been a muddy game there in the last 3 years and for parking nothing comes close.

Any news on Gary Hughes pulling the pin on TV

My tip this week as hard it is to say it but Birdwood by 26 pts. Dawson BOG with 7 goals

Tim i thought you wouldn't even no there was footy was still being played being a Maccy supporter your season as usual finished a month ago your only chance of seeing a final is if they play it on your home deck and did you hear any whinging in 08 and 09 when it was 2 northern hills sides (Kersbrook and Torrens Valley) playing in the grand final that they had to travel all the way to Maccy.

My totally unbiased tips for Saturday. :)
A's- Birdwood by 32 points- Jock Mcleay BOG.
B's- Birdwood by plenty- Josh Green comes of age and cleans up.
SC- Kangarilla undefeated and should continue.
JC - Birdwood - NB may be undefeated but I'm sure Birdwood will come good on the day. Brad Snowden gets his act together and is BOG.
Under 13's - NB

Was a good umpire but felt not so much in games that involved us and I can only assume that was because he had been a Maccy player so he didn't wan't to be seen to be giving them favouritism. But he was still nowhere near as bad as a former umpire (involved at another club) who must have been holding a grudge from his playing days back in the 70's and early 80's.
