Valleys went out in straight sets in 2007 BTP. We beat them in a semi-final at Noarlunga after beating OSB/Lonsdale in a 5 v 8 final the week before. In the top 8, any time that a team from position 5,6,7,8 makes at least a Prelim means that someone has to have gone out in straight sets.

AFL Flyer - I don't know where the council got the soil when they first laid Flagstaff Hill Oval but it was like coarse beach sand.

8th is still yet to beat 5th ever though.

Just looked it up ---- it happened in the first two years of Top Eight.
2002- Port (7th) 16-9 d. Kangarilla (6th) 11-11
2003- Reynella (7th) 9-15 d. Cove (6th) 5-4

hasn't happened since (until 2011 that is)

Cheers BTP, Now have another one to look up.

Is it the first time 7th has reached the prelim?

And is it a few years in a row now that at least one team has gone out in "straight sets"?
2011 - shoes
2010 - cove?
2009 - townies
2008 - valleys
2007 - cove
2006 - porties?

And also in 2004, lost to Reynella then Cove

No sure if that was 2004 SF. In that year I think you will find that top 4 were MV, Brighton, Reynella & Porties. The interesting thing about that finals series was in week 1 of finals MV lost to Porties and Brighton (who kicked 2-20) lost to Reynella. Then MV and Brighton won in week 2 and played those two week 1 winners in the cross over Prelims and both won and played off in the GF. MV won to commence their run of 5 flags in 6 years. I think this is the only time this has ever happened in the SFL or AFL top 8 system.

The other point about 2004 was that was the year when HV were deducted 6 wins due to refusing to play week 1 of the season due to late change of programme that saw Hackham withdrawal from the A grade comp. I think HV won 17 out of 18 but with deduction equated to 11 wins which left them out of the top 4 but still a huge chance for the flag. The Bombers beat them in week 2 of the finals at Marion Oval in what was a big upset. My memory of 2005 is a bit hazy so it could have been that season.

No argument there, DTH. There has certainly been a spate of "straight sets" situations in recent years. I was merely answering the query of how many successive seasons it has happened, and Cove clearly got back along with Morphett Vale in 2010, making it currently once in a row.

I have heard Paul Crate is the new coach of Christies beach Football club.. Can anyone shed light on what he is like as a coach & will he bring new faces with himself to the club to boost them up?

I would have thought that being out of the game for so long he would struggle with recruiting. Here are a few thoughts though in no particular order. Glenn Godfrey, Gary Bilney, Brenton Ziersch, David Whiley, Anthony Nobes, Travis Bahr (might be able to bring him back from the Hills league). This might be a start for him, it is what GWS is doing.

Nobesy is an umpire now so it may be too late to get him back from the Dark Side...

He is actually a very good sensible umpire, hopefully we see him advance through the grades in the next couple of years.

I have watched Nobes at under 18 level a few times this year and he was terrible early but I have seen big improvement over the season so I guess it’s a bit like being a player you can’t buy experience
